The City of Salem’s Human Rights Commission, in partnership with Western Oregon University, has launched its annual Community Belonging Survey and encourages all community members to participate. The survey, open now through May 12, 2026, asks Salem community members about their experiences with discrimination and sense of belonging, as well as perceptions of welcoming.

The survey is anonymous and takes about 5-10 minutes to complete. It is open to anyone who lives in or regularly spends time in Salem and is available in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Chuukese and Marshallese.

You may have met her as our MC at the Blueprint Fundraiser, but Nikki Paxton is no stranger to leadership—and we’re excited to welcome her as a workshop presenter!

Nikki is the Owner and Executive Consultant of Nikki Pothos Fundraising and Events LLC, which she launched in 2023 to help nonprofits find the sweet spot between meeting their goals and working with funders—without centering them. A mother of four bright boys, Nikki encourages authenticity and challenging the status quo in both her family and her work.

Nikki holds a Bachelor’s Degree in English from the University of Central Arkansas and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Her professional experience includes roles as Donor Relations Manager for Family Building Blocks, Development Director for Imagine Black, and Director of Development for the Urban League of Portland. As she says, “Whatever you believe is true.”

We’re still feeling the energy from our first signature fundraiser in April! These photos capture the joy, connection, and community we built together on April 24.

We’re proud to share that we raised over $13,000 in support of our mission.

A special congratulations to our incredible awardees:
• Lillian Stevenson, CEO of Berrien Concrete — Innovation Engineer Awardee
• Marie Bradford-Blevins, Executive Director of Salem’s Riverfront Carousel — Visionary Architect Awardee

To our sponsors, table hosts, and guests—thank you for making the evening truly unforgettable. And to our fundraising team and volunteers who handled every detail with care—we couldn’t have done it without you.

We’re just getting started, and we’re excited for what’s ahead

Some of our team had the absolute joy of joining Claggett Middle School’s BSU for their monthly gathering! ✨

Our very own braiding extraordinaire, Maleah Perryman shared the importance of hair care, while Board VP Cynthia led a segment on skincare. The highlight? Students got to unbox hair and facial care kits—filled with products and tools intentionally designed with us in mind. From textured hair essentials to skincare that celebrates and supports melanin-rich skin, it was all about access, education, and representation.

Moments like this remind us that learning how to care for your hair and skin matters—but even more important is creating space for young people to love who they are and celebrate it boldly. 💛

Huge thank you to the team at Claggett Middle School for fostering such an affirming and empowering space for our youth and for allowing our organization to support these efforts alongside SK School District and United Way!
