When someone you love is going through the worst thing imaginable, most of us freeze. We say “let me know if you need anything,” and we mean it, but the person in the middle of it usually can’t answer.

Leigha Hill knows both sides of that. Her son Henry was born at 24 weeks, weighing 14 ounces. He fought for six months and became known as the comeback kid. When he died, Leigha and her husband were held up by a community that simply showed up. A meal train they never asked for. A family who lent them a place to sleep near the hospital. A box of letters from strangers. Years later she found out her daughter’s preschool teacher had been one of the people who dropped off a meal, without ever knowing them.

Her advice is simple. Don’t wait to be told how to help. Don’t say “at least.” Ask about the person who was lost. And just do something.

Henry’s story lives on now through Henry’s Little Free Library and through his little sister Vivienne, whose name means full of life. We released this episode on Henry’s birthday.

On the day Henry was born, a neighbor sat down and wrote him a poem.

Henry arrived at 24 weeks, weighing just 14 ounces. Through months in the NICU and every setback that came, he kept fighting his way back. The people caring for him started calling him the comeback kid.

As we approach America’s 250th Independence Day, here is a story from an American soldier.

Before Heather wore the uniform, she was a little girl learning to survive things no child should have to. Abuse, poverty, and a kind of weight that followed her into adulthood.

One of the hardest things she had to learn, and it took therapy to get there, is this. If you were victimized, the shame was never yours to carry.

Heather has been fighting her whole life. First just to make it through, and now in service to this country. That same warrior spirit is why she can sit down and tell the truth out loud, so another woman knows she is not alone.
