We Believe in an Inclusive, Anti-Racist Union

Racial and social justice are foundational values of our international union, but too often those values have been ones SEIU 503 failed to match.

Many of us got involved because we experienced racism within our own union, and then were retaliated against or harassed for speaking out.

We believe that our union belongs to us - ALL of us. There is deep structural racism within 503 organizationally that is actively harming, silencing, and disenfranchising members of color, and we refuse to continue to allow it.

We will have a zero tolerance policy on racism, as well as on humiliation, harassment, and retaliation against union members simply for speaking in dissent or calling out racism when it occurs within the union.

Vigorous debate is a cornerstone of democracy; targeting those who speak out or challenge the status quo has a chilling effect on our membership and is inherently anti-union.

Transparency is a core union value, but SEIU 503 leadership has not consistently upheld it.

Members have at times been denied or delayed access to basic financial and governance information, making it difficult to fully understand how decisions are being made.

We support our union — which is exactly why we’re committed to better accountability and openness with members.

Since announcing our candidacy, several women of color on our ticket have experienced hostility and discriminatory behavior in union spaces.

We are addressing these incidents through the appropriate channels.

But we also want to say something bigger:

This campaign believes union culture matters.

A strong union is one where every member:
• feels safe participating
• can ask questions without hostility
• is treated with dignity
• is welcomed into leadership

We believe accountability and solidarity go hand in hand.

We are committed to building a member-led union culture rooted in respect, inclusion, and integrity.

Because our union is strongest when every member belongs.

Estamos abordando estos incidentes a través de los canales correspondientes.

This experience has equipped him with the skills necessary to manage our union's finances effectively and responsibly.

'As Treasurer, I am committed to prudent management of member dues, emphasizing transparency and accountability. It is crucial that our resources fortify the union, provide support to members at all worksites, and mirror the priorities set forth by our members. I vow to maintain clear financial protocols and ensure the integrity of our decision-making processes.'

Hortensia has over 20 years of experience in home care. Like so many of you, she has shown up every day to care for others. She knows that home care work is more than just a job. It provides dignity and support during the most vulnerable times of people’s lives.
