Whiskey and Wishes South Carolina

Whiskey and Wishes South Carolina Whiskey and Wishes is a collective giving group that provides grants to local non profits.

Founded in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area in 2020, the South Carolina Chapter opened in 2021. George Bernard Shaw once said, “Whiskey is liquid sunshine.” And just like sunshine spreads happiness, we believe that whiskey and bourbon have the ability to bring us together for the greater good of our community. We have coupled our love for bourbon and our passion to give back to th

e Upstate South Carolina community to spread "cask-strength kindness" through collective giving to create Whiskey and Wishes Upstate South Carolina. Through our collective giving model, we leverage the resources of individuals to make transformative grants, benefitting nonprofit organizations throughout our region. Each year our members are asked to pledge a gift of $1,000 to the foundation. Being a member provides the ability to participate in bourbon events throughout the year. At the conclusion of each year, local non-profits are invited to complete a grant application with information about their program. Our group then reviews, selects, and awards transformative grants to non-profits in our own community. Members may also participate in bourbon events throughout the year for additional fees. At the conclusion of each year, 100% of the foundation money raised goes to local non-profits which are invited to complete a grant application with information about their program. Our group then reviews, selects, and awards transformative grants to non-profits in the Upstate South Carolina area.

Thank you to all who supported Whiskey and Wishes last year! One great organization you helped was the Tamassee DAR School. Your support raised a $16,500 grant for this local organization.

Jason Eller, Development Officer for Tamassee DAR School shared, “We are incredibly grateful to the generous members of Whiskey and Wishes and the Foundation for selecting Tamassee as a 2023 grant recipient. We are especially grateful to Kevin Scott, Executive Director of South Carolina Whiskey and Wishes, and his wife Kathy for their support of Tamassee and the Starlight Program. This amazing donation will be used in support of operational and educational expenses of our Starlight Program for mothers in recovery and their children. This includes utilities, upkeep, training for staff and moms, food, transportation, counseling, life-skills training, parenting coaching, education, and so much more.”

Starlight at Tamassee is a long-term (up to 3 years) program designed to serve both the mother and her children in one of Tamassee’s on-campus homes. Mothers and their children live in community with one another while they receive individual and family counseling that focuses on the mother and child’s unique needs, works to heal from traumatic experiences, develops coping skills, and promotes family restoration and bonding. Jason says, “To empower recovery from substance abuse and other addictive behaviors, our program utilizes evidenced based, therapeutic, and biblical curriculum along with the twelve steps approach and
of course, the love of God, to help mothers reach permanency in recovery.”

Tamassee DAR School and its programs are located in the beautiful Foothills of Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. For more information about Starlight or any of Tamassee’s programs or how you can help, please visit www.tdarschool.org or contact Bailey Duncan, Communications Officer at [email protected].

Whiskey Wednesday!

If you are a collector, whiskey could be the perfect product to hunt down and hold onto. In 2019, the Macallan’s Fine and Rare 60-Year-Old 1926 was purchased at a Sotheby's auction in London for $1.9 million. Do you have a favorite whiskey in your collection?

Whiskey Wednesday!

Did you know that whiskey can benefit your health? Extensive research has found that those who enjoy whiskey in moderation experience lower rates of heart attacks and strokes. Whiskey’s high levels of polyphenols (aka antioxidants) help decrease “bad” cholesterol levels by reducing fat in your blood.

Whiskey Wednesday!

Did you know that the famous red-wax sealed Maker’s Mark bottle was designed by the distillery owner’s wife, Margie Samuels. The Samuels wanted something that would stand out in the liquor store and to reassure drinkers that this bourbon was quality made.

Mrs. Samuels also came up with the name, which comes from the “mark of the maker,” a signature that indicates a product is handmade.

Whiskey Wednesday!

For our local followers, did you know that the distilling industry grew 142% from 2014-2019 in South Carolina? That means there are plenty of new craft and larger distillers to try in addition to the more established distilleries!
Next time you’re looking for a weekend activity, visit one of the distilleries on the SC Distillery Trail!

Whiskey Wednesday!

Where do you think the word bourbon originates? Some people believe bourbon was named after Bourbon County in Kentucky. Others believe it was named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, a major port for trading Kentucky whisky. Interestingly, New Orleans Bourbon Street was named from French origins (as Louisiana was colonized by the French in 1682).

So, where do you think the word bourbon originates?
