Canstruction Marion and Polk Counties Oregon

Canstruction Marion and Polk Counties Oregon Canstruction is an event where we build artistic structures out of canned food, that is later donated to the local food share!

This is for all cities in Marion and Polk Counties of Oregon.

After much consideration, our team will be stepping away from organizing this event.
If there’s a group in Marion or Polk County (Oregon) interested in continuing this tradition, we’d be more than happy to pass the baton—and even provide some training to help you get started.

Please send us a message if you’re interested!
Thank you, community, for all the support, memories, and fun over the years.

Would you like to win a $25 gift card to Dutch Bros? Check out our structure at the Oregon State Fair and guess how many cans it is made out of.
How many cans?
How much do all the cans weigh?
Guess the closest and win a gift card!

There’s been a lot going on to prepare for Canstruction 2024 at the Oregon State Fair! Thanks Zak Stone Photography for capturing some of these photos of our team hard at work.
We hope to see you there this Friday and Saturday, in the Creative Living building. We will be actively building both days!

Who wants free tickets and parking to the Oregon State Fair?
If you come lend a hand for a couple of hours, we can get you (and any helpers you bring) into the fair for free!

We need help with the build on Friday the 23rd and Saturday the 24th from 10am until probably 5pm

We need volunteers on "Share at the Fair" day on the 28th. We are trying to fill the spots to sit at a table at one of the gates, collect cans and donations for the food share. If people bring 2 cans of food or donate $1 cash, they get $2 off one entry admission. It's the big hunger awareness day and will be a lot of fun and rewarding. Those are 3 hour shifts and need 2 people per table. Bring a buddy!

And finally we need help for de-canstruction, this is where everything is broken down and re-palletized for the Foodshare to come pick up. That's happening on Labor Day.

If you can help with one or all of these, reach out to us. You can pick up passes and parking vouchers from us on Monday.

We had a great time last night sorting through can labels, mocking up some of our design plans and making engineering strategies. This year’s structure will be awesome and our team is phenomenal!!!! It’s not too late to join us and lend a hand. Each person volunteering for one small part is what makes this happen.

We will be having a FUN collaborative design meeting, including Legos, Crayons/Markers, paper, and some canned food to come up with design ideas. Join us at The Yard Foodpark at 5:30pm on 5/14. If you want to join our team, bring your creative ideas and get ready for a fun arts and crafts time together. :-)

CAN-struction 2024!

Calling all potential team members!!!!!! FIRST MEETING 5/1!
Signing up to be part of the team means you can do one small piece of this or help out with the whole thing, whatever you are willing and able to help with.
• Creative planning to decide on what structure we build this year
• CAD design drafting to build it virtually
• making label and canned food decisions on what will fit and look best for colors that we need to make this happen
• Shopping for canned food bargains and getting all the cans gathered
• Fundraising for the cost of the canned food
• The practice-build to make certain all the elements come together and re-thinking what may not work (this is where those engineering minds are helpful!)
• The big build day at the Oregon State Fair (August 24th) where we put it all together
• Timelapse and photography skills documenting the steps as we go
• “Share at the Fair” Day collecting canned food at the fair gates to be donated along with the structure’s cans
• And finally the tear-down day where we box the cans all back up and meet the food share truck to come and take the canned food back to their facility to help feed our hungry neighbors.

So, what can you do to help with this super fun, creative, and rewarding project that helps give back to our community?

Our first team meeting will be on May 1st at noon via Zoom. Email Juli to sign up for the meeting and find out more: [email protected]

What an incredible year for Canstruction in Marion and Polk Counties! 1,488 pounds of public donations and 6,770 pounds of green beans from our structure! That’s the equivalent to 6,882 meals that will be provided to our food insecure neighbors!
We could not have done this without so many: Oregon State Fair 2023 for hosting us and being a sponsor! The incredible team (Jenni, Mary, Zach and many more!) in the Creaitve Living Building went above and beyond to provide what we needed for our build & encouraged us along.
Our sponsors Emery & Sons Construction Group, Monarch Window Coverings, Inc., South Town Glass, Saalfeld Griggs PC, Willamette Valley Bank - Caslin Inc., R & S Industrial Supplies, Dalke Construction, Salem Contractors Exchange, Hunter-Davisson, Inc., Triplett Wellman Contractors, A.G. Sadowski Co Oregon State Bridge Company, Federated Insurance, hpcivil, Mike Riddle Construction, Mayor Cathy Clark, and in kind donors: Grocery Outlet, Withers Lumber Co.
Working with Josh Gwin with the Marion Polk Food Share has been fantastic. He is extremely knowledgeable and helpful at every step.
The NAWIC Salem Chapter #198 ladies and our volunteer group that lent a hand made everything come together so well!
THANK YOU EVERYONE! We brought awareness to hunger issues to so many at the fair and we provided an incredible amount of food. If you were part of this, even in a small way, you should feel so proud and rewarded. Well done team!!!

Thank you everyone who made our Canned Food drive a success!
