Nicole Aunapu Mann made history as the first Native American woman to journey to space.

A proud member of the Wailacki Tribe, Mann’s groundbreaking mission aboard SpaceX’s Crew-5 in 2022 was a monumental achievement.

As the mission commander, she spent six months aboard the International Space Station, conducting scientific experiments and completing two spacewalks. 🌌

Her journey highlights the power of representation and resilience, showing how diverse voices can inspire and lead in spaces once thought unreachable.

Mann’s reflection on Earth’s beauty from space and the importance of international cooperation in space exploration serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all people and our shared responsibility to protect our planet. 🌍

Through her success, Mann continues to break barriers and motivate future generations, proving that the stars are within everyone’s reach.

Sharing of Invitation below from Robyn El Kay from OPB.

"My name is Robyn El Kay, and I’m OPB’s Director of Strategic Engagement and Events. I’m reaching out to personally invite you and your community to our upcoming Advance Screening of the new “Oregon Experience” special, “Uncovering Boarding Schools: Stories of Resistance and Resilience.”

This new special is set to air at the beginning of November, but we’re thrilled to be offering a world premiere advance screening at the Tower Theatre in Bend on September 24, 2025.

“Uncovering Boarding Schools: Stories of Resistance and Resilience” follows the journey of Klamath Tribes member Gabriann “Abby” Hall as she uncovers the hidden stories of her family’s experiences in Native American boarding schools, stretching from the first generation forced onto a reservation to the present era.

What she discovers is a disturbing, often hidden history of countless deaths, fractured families, and a wall of silence due to federal policies designed to destroy Native American culture. Ultimately, she also finds a legacy of strength and resilience.

After the screening, join producer Kami Horton for a panel conversation about the process of uncovering the story and what learnings we can glean to carry us forward.

The OPB team is so excited to share this advance screening with the Bend community. I hope you are able to join us, and share the event with your community, friends, and colleagues. Attached you’ll find some materials to share.

Tickets are free, but required. Register at opb.org/towertheatre .

Hope to see you there,

Robyn El Kay
