As the summer season has arrived...The park has been busy getting things ready for your visit...Need roof repairs and chimney upgrades, painting the porch at the Quaker Museum, long awaited new floor in the Quaker Picnic Shelter, parking lot upgrade at the Red House Picnic Area and a new maintenance facility in Red House.

I took these photos of the Red House Restaraunt in June of 2014.
The park had just finished a major
remodeling job on the second floor of the Red House Administration Building.
They took each board down and labeled it.
After it was gutted they rewired and re-insulated it. I thought it was cool that they put USB charging ports in the wall outlets. They remediated a very bad bat problem at the fireplace.
They then refinished every board piece by piece and put it back together.
Later they renovated the exterior with a new slate roof and reworked all of the windows. Copper flashing was renewed with historic precision.
It was good to see this beautiful iconic building preserved for generations to come.

Here we are at the edge of summer, ready to dive into another wonderful season of our beautiful and historical Allegany State Park and all its glory. There is so much to do here, that it is hard to fit everything in. The three lakes are all peaceful and beautiful for fishing, swimming or viewing. So many great hiking trails, each offering something a little different. Picnic areas and pavillions. A scenic view from stone tower, or summit firetower on Saturdays. Can't forget the wonder of thunder rocks. The bear caves are a favorite too. A visit to the Administration building is a must, restaurant, store, and museum along with spectacular architecture . There are many wildlife viewing areas. So have a wonderful visit. Enjoy these pictures, some older, some newer, all wonderful.

Group Camp 12, located on the Red House side of the park, was once called Camp Arrowhead. It was a camp for youth of the Jewish faith.
The camp was built in 1928 and opened in 1929. In 1968 lightening struck and burned down the original mess hall and it was rebuilt. Below are photos I’ve taken over the years and about seven years ago all of the cabins were demolished and rebuilt.
The shower facilities and pit toilets remain the originals and the mess hall gained a new roof during the cabin rebuilds.
Going back to the camp off France Brook Road was Hall Rd. Named after a former sawmill that was located at the area, it was also a cabin trail briefly with five cabins located along the creek.
The last Google Earth photos were labeled by Allan Rosenblitt, Admin. of the Camp Arrowhead FB Group. It shows the original locations of the buildings and facilities when he frequently camped there as a youth. You can ask to join his page which is filled with fascinating photos from back in his day.
The camp is now called Group Camp 12 and it is available during the mostly summer season as the cabins and facilities have no heat source.
Please note, the cabins in the photos below are of the original cabins. To have a virtual tour of the newly built cabins please visit this link:

The last picture shows the new cabins under construction.
You can also search YouTube for virtual tours of Group Camp 12 with original cabins, Group Camp 10, Group Camp 5, Camp Turner and Camp Allegany.

Last weekend our members were privileged to be a part of the 68th Annual Allegany Nature Pilgrimage. The Historical Society collects, records and shares state park history. Paul's vast knowledge of the Red House Sawmill, Randal's passion to share the history of Science Lake and Dave's interest in the lost and forgotten places of the park's early history created great tours for the attendees. The weather was amazing and the pilgrimage had nearly 900 people this year. Thank you for inviting the us along.
