Alzheimers Research Foundation We envision a world without Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia and currently affects over 5 million Americans.

Our mission is to make that future possible by advancing innovative research and education focused on prevention, early intervention, and functional medicine. Discovered over 100 years ago by Doctor Alois Alzheimer, it is a progressive neurological disease that causes memory loss, confusion, and a decline in functionality. While the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are age 65 and older, up to 5

percent of people with Alzheimer’s are in their 40’s and 50’s. Alzheimer’s can be a devastating disease both for the people who suffer from it, and for friends and family members who have to deal with the fact that their loved one no longer remembers them. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for Alzheimer’s…but thanks to organizations like Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, we’re getting closer.

Just because something is available over the counter doesn’t mean we know its full impact on the brain.

A recent University of Florida analysis found that glucosamine use was associated with a 25% higher likelihood of progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia.

This does not prove that glucosamine causes dementia but it does raise important questions that researchers are working to better understand.

At the Alzheimer’s Research Foundation, we support research that challenges assumptions, investigates potential risk factors, and brings us closer to understanding what may influence cognitive decline.

A study led by Dr. Ramon Sun at the University of Florida, found that glucosamine use was associated with a 25% higher likelihood of progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to dementia. The research also identified hyperglycosylation a metabolic process that may play a role in accelerating Alzheimer’s disease progression.

These findings do not prove that glucosamine causes dementia, but they open the door to further research into pathways beyond the plaques and tangles traditionally associated with Alzheimer’s.
