Happy 249th birthday to our very own stars and stripes! The Continental Congress adopted the Flag Resolution on June 14th, 1777. Today, we commemorate June 14th as Flag Day.

The American flag’s design has changed dramatically since 1777. At first, Congress wanted to add both a star and a stripe for each new state—and the famous Star-Spangled Banner from Fort McHenry National Monument & Historic Shrine ended up with fifteen stars and fifteen matching stripes. The design has been officially modified 27 times, but the version with fifty stars has flown since 1959. ⭐️

Images of the flag abound in the CGHS collection. It flies from every shrimp boat at the annual Blessing of the Fleet. It was saluted by troops at Naval Air Station St. Simons during World War II, and it flew as our last Lighthouse keeper, David O’Hagan, attended the ceremony that opened the Lighthouse to the public in 1984. Perhaps most recognizably, the American flag appeared at every Liberty ship launching at Brunswick’s J.A. Jones Shipyard: day or night, rain or shine.

During this momentous Semiquincentennial anniversary year, CGHS has provided interactive and engaging experiences for our community to explore the nation’s founding 250 years ago. We are proud to have sponsored an episode of the new Georgia Public Broadcasting series, Marked📍, which shines a light on St. Simons Island during the Revolution. The series “looks at the unique, complex, and important role the 13th original colony played during America’s revolutionary period.”

On Monday, June 15, in the Event Hall of the A.W. Jones Heritage Center, join us for a watch party of GPB's 12-minute Coastal Georgia episode. The excitement will start before the episode, as a special CGHS commercial—which will air before each live showing on local PBS stations around the state and beyond, as well as before every viewing on GPB's digital platform—highlights our organization and region.

The first showing will begin at noon and be played every 30 minutes until the last showing at 4:30 pm. No registration is needed; everyone is welcome! Bring snacks and friends!
