Our summer archaeology interns don't just study history—they help preserve it!
From the lab to the field, this amazing crew is working hard at Fort Frederica. Here you can see them put in some serious elbow grease to restore our historic cannons so they’re ready for their new carriages. Thank you to our interns, Fort staff, Elkin Alston / Goddard Foundation and our Friends Members for making this wonderful internship program possible!

Did you know: Major William Horton came to the Georgia colony in 1736 and quickly became Oglethorpe's leading military aide and top confidant. To fortify the southern border of the colony, Oglethorpe granted Horton Jekyll Island in 1735/1738. Horton established a highly prosperous plantation there to cultivate crops like barley, corn, and indigo. This layout was strategic; Horton’s farming actively supplied and fed the soldiers and families at Oglethorpe's Fort Frederica when they faced severe food shortages.

This sounds like a wonderful event on June 27th!

Out with the old, in with the new! We are thrilled to debut our brand-new wayside exhibits at the excavation sites. Our old signs were showing their age and getting hard to read, but these beautiful new replacements bring our history into clear focus.

A massive thank you to the Friends of Fort Frederica for their vital support in helping to fund this project. We couldn't do it without you! Stop by this weekend to see them for yourself.

Beginner Archaeology Camp began yesterday! These new young archaeologists are learning how to dig, sift, clean and identify artifacts that they find in the Shriners Trench next to our beautiful Karl Meschke Archaeology Lab. Thanks to the Elkin Alston / Goddard Foundation and the generosity of Friends of Fort Frederica, we are able to offer this incredible program. A HUGE shoutout to our wonderful interns, archaeologists and staff for all their hard work, time and energy. You're the best!

As Friends of Fort Frederica, we love welcoming visitors to the park—but this week, we have some extra special, extra tiny new friends on the way! Move over archeologists, there’s a new digger in town! A beautiful female Diamondback Terrapin decided that Broad Street was the absolute perfect spot to start her family. Check out the original post from Fort Frederica National Monument below to learn more about our newest neighbors and their nest, and how we can help give them the space they need to grow! 👇
