Twitty Park

Twitty Park Assure that Glynn County maintains Twitty Park for the benefit of the citizens of Glynn County Simons Island.
• Mr. T. L. Cain of St. Cain’s original gift.

What is Twitty Park?

• Twitty Park is an 100 year old park containing some of the most iconic live oak trees in Glynn County. The live oaks and Spanish moss drape the eastern corners of the prominent intersection of Federica Road and Sea Island Road on St. Simons Island dedicated Twitty Park (formerly “Cain Park”) to the citizens of Glynn County in 1924. Twitty Park is a public park held in publi

c trust for the citizens of Glynn County and the State of Georgia. Who owns Twitty Park?

• The citizens of Glynn County and the State of Georgia own a beneficial interest in Twitty Park. Currently, SIA Propco II, LLC, a subsidiary company of Sea Island Acquisitions, the purchaser of the bankrupt Sea Island Company, is recognized as the record owner of Twitty Park. However, there is controversy regarding whether SIA Propco II, LLC or Glynn County is the rightful owner. Regardless of who owns the current legal title to Twitty Park, it must be maintained as a public park for the benefit of the public.
• The Glynn Environmental Coalition, Inc., Ms. Jane Fraser, and certain members of T. Cain’s family own interests in Twitty Park that allow them to assure that Glynn County maintains Twitty Park for the benefit of the citizens of Glynn County and the State of Georgia and to enforce the public park requirements of T. What is the lawsuit about?

• Local residents are taking a stand to protect Twitty Park and honor T.L. Cain’s wishes.
• Members of the Cain family have conveyed their reverter interests to Glynn Environmental Coalition and Ms. Fraser to assure that their grandfather’s gift to Glynn County is maintained as a public park like he intended with his gift in 1924.
• On behalf of all of the citizens of Glynn County this lawsuit seeks a declaration: Twitty Park must be maintained as a public park in perpetuity.

A MESSAGE FROM TL CAIN's FAMILY:

Hello! We are TL Cain's great-granddaughter, and TL Cain's great-great-grandson enjoying the beautiful, historic park that he donated to the county a century ago.

Our great-grandfather intended Twitty Park to be a gift to the public — a peaceful, beautiful space for you, your children, and to future generations to enjoy nature. Unfortunately, it has been sliced up over the years with easements and roads leading to Sea Island and their properties. Now it’s being threatened again by a proposed roundabout that would remove old oak trees, harm the environment, and forever change the character of this historic space.

Imagine if your grandfather or great-grandfather donated land to this community for everyone to enjoy… and many decades later you watched it slowly be destroyed. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see.

Our letters to the county commissioners from members of the family of TL Cain have gone unanswered. This park matters deeply to our family — and to many others — and we intend to continue standing up for it. Thankfully, many people in the area have expressed serious concerns and we hope the citizens of Glynn county will stand with us to preserve this historic piece of land before it’s too late. Glynn county has enough roundabouts and Sea Island needs to find another alternative to cutting down trees and destroying land just so that their residents and visitors won't be inconvenienced.

The county is a trustee for the park dedicated under the Public Trust Doctrine. We are asking every citizen to please write to the county commissioners and respectfully urge them to preserve Twitty Park as it is. Let them know that you oppose any further development.

If you care about protecting what was entrusted to your community, now is the time to speak up. Email or call your county commissioners on behalf of preserving the land. Commissioners work for the people of Glynn county — and your voice matters!

ICYMI -- more insight from TL Cain's family. “It is a piece of living history, a green oasis, and a reminder of the generosity of one man who wanted to leave behind something beautiful for all of us,” she said. “Once it is gone, it cannot be brought back.”
