A change of plans for Coast Lab Kids last Friday 🌊

With class expected to be cancelled due to the passing storm, we had a much smaller crew than usual. For the families who did turn up, our coaches pulled together a spontaneous mini session, taking advantage of the swell for some surfing.

It was a laid-back morning with plenty of time to play. The bigger kids caught waves while the littles coloured on the beach, dug in the sand, and enjoyed being together.

A little less structure, a lot of play, and a lovely morning with our beach crew. 🤍

After planting sea oats, we moved into the skimboarding portion of our Coast Lab class. 🌊

We started with stretching and warm-ups, then worked on technique both on the sand and in the water—giving students time to practice, build confidence, and develop their skills.

A full morning of coastal conservation, movement, and learning together.

CoastLabKids helping protect our beaches 🌾🌊

We joined the City of Treasure Island and other volunteers on Sunset Beach to help plant sea oats as part of an effort to add more than 1,100 plants to the shoreline!

Sea oats help hold sand in place with their deep roots, building and strengthening the dunes that protect our coast from erosion and storm surge. The kids got to be part of that work—digging, planting, and learning why these grasses matter.

A lovely morning giving back to a beach we love and learning how to care for it. 💛

A little ocean science, a little local art, and a whole lot of beach fun 🐚🎨🌊

This week at Coast Lab Kids, our lesson was all about shells! We welcomed a local mural artist to paint shells with the kids, turning nature’s little treasures into their own works of art.

Then it was time for skimboarding and a relay race in the Gulf—surfboard vs. kayak! 🏄‍♂️🛶

To make them… grippier. 👣

But is it simply MORE wax = MORE friction?

Our CoastLab scientists put that question to the test. 🧪

We compared surfaces, textures, and wax patterns to see what happened when things tried to slide vs. grip.

Because sometimes the best science questions are hiding in plain sight:

Why can a surfboard glide through the water while your feet stay planted on top? 🌊
