Not trying to dampen anyones holiday....but right now, right here in our fair little city, this is reality for literally hundreds of dogs and cats.
Everyone says 'its the thought that counts' but its NOT!! Thoughts dont do s**t! Thoughts dont save lives. Thoughts dont feed hungry bellies. Thoughts dont pay vet bills. Actions do! And your actions dont have to be as drastic as adopting a dog...there are so very many ways to help!
1.Instead of posting 22 selfies and a pic of your meal prep efforts today, how about sharing a shot or two of a shelter animal.
2.Better yet, take one for a walk and get all 22 of those selfies with your duck lips planted firmly on that pooches snout!
3.Donate. You dont have to be rich- $!0 bucks goes a long way in the hands of a reputable rescuer. A lot further than this mornings Starbucks.
4.Donate towels or blankets. Food or toys. We dont mind wear, or even stains. Our dogs are far more worried about cold concrete than threadcounts.
5.Donate Frontline! (Be warned, donations of this sort often mean getting hugs from the rescue director)!
6.Offer to walk dogs. Leash manners make a dog much more adoptable...and walking dogs makes you more friends. Its a win/win!
7. Offer to photograph dogs. Why waste that state of the art phone camera?
8. Offer to train dogs. Nobody wants a dog that doesnt know sit!
9. Foster! A great way to save a life, and share your love with a dog without a long term commitment! Fosters are the true back bone of most rescues and are generally regarded like Gods and Goddesses!
10. Offer to watch a fosterer or rescuers dogs so that they can take a weekend to do normal people things. Well, they are probably too broke to go anywhere, but a staycation without barking or p**p scooping is pretty much nirvana to most serious fosters or rescuers.
11. Never shop, adopt! Perfect pups are filling every shelter! And more than a quarter of those pups are 'pure-bred'! (Truth- look it up!! and think of all the MK bags you could get saving $2800 on that pure bred S**t zu).
12. Spay or neuter your own pets! They live longer, happier and healthier lives. And we rescuers wont talk mad s**t about you. 😉
13. Next time you head to Disney or the keys- e-mail the local rescues and ask if they have any transport needs.
14.Compacency kills- if you see abuse or neglect, REPORT IT!! If you do nothing, you ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM.
15.Keep spreading the word!! We are the only voice these animals have, so please, keep spreading thier message!
16.And finally, microchip your babies, keep them safely contained or leashed, because trust me, you do not ever want them to see the inside of a shelter.
