Gillian Probert ’23 considers herself a “serial hobbyist,” crediting Eckerd with her conscious effort to avoid limiting herself to a preconceived vision. At Eckerd, she founded the Artists for Impact collegiate chapter, creating opportunities for emerging artists while raising funds for local nonprofits. In 2023, she launched her art business, Moonlit Creations.

Probert is now the curator at Duncan McClellan Gallery, working with founder Duncan McClellan and his wife, fellow Eckerd alumna Irene McClellan ’91, where Probert has developed her practice in blown and carved glass. In 2026, she was selected as one of the Morean Arts Center’s “Fresh Squeezed 10: Emerging Artists” for her glass vessels, which explore animal mimicry through a surreal lens, and was also recently profiled in The Artisan Magazine.

A crowd gathered to cheer on Cascade the manatee as he made his return to the wild yesterday. Cascade was rescued in May by MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife and Eckerd College Search and Rescue students after suffering from boat-related injuries. The large adult male was rehabilitated at ZooTampa at Lowry Park, and was finally medically cleared for release this week.

The effort, which involved staff and volunteers from FWC’s Marine Mammal Pathobiology Lab on Eckerd’s campus, ZooTampa and EC-SAR, was coordinated by Andy Garrett ’99, State of Florida Manatee Rescue Coordinator.

“A Gathering of 3-Dimensional Works” is currently on display at the Elliott Gallery at Eckerd’s Nielsen Center for Visual Arts, with six of the thirteen works on display created by alumni.

The curatorial concept focuses attention and lighting on sculptural and kinetic art—featuring a rich variety of materials from clay and metals to electronics, plexiglass and even human hair.

Exhibited are pieces from the late Susan Sanders ’69, Stanton Hunter ’80, John Eckert ’69, D.J. Jackson ’12 and Edgar Baker '25—with the latter two artists' work created during their time as Eckerd students.

The Gallery is open for public viewing through October 23, 2026. Come visit Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., to see the wonderful art of fellow alumni!
