Methodist Town Neighborhood - Downtown St Pete

Methodist Town Neighborhood - Downtown St Pete Downtown St Pete's Methodist Town Neighborhood is a community on the rise. We are a short walk from all the excitement of downtown near The EDGE District.

Methodist Town Neighborhood is located in the northwest corner of Downtown St Petersburg and shares its southern border with the vibrant EDGE District. Our borders run from 1st Avenue N to 5th Avenue N and from MLK Jr St N/9th St N to 16th St N. In 1894, Methodist Town began to develop around and was named for Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church which continues to be an important part of our

neighborhood. During the early 20th century and the era of segregation, Methodist Town was the only black neighborhood in the city that existed north of Central Avenue. It had thriving business and residential areas up until the 1960s when much of it was redeveloped in the name of urban renewal and the creation of I-375 that effectively cut all access to our northern neighbor, Historic Uptown. Many of the original homes were replaced by multi-family housing and senior living apartments with the exception of the 13th, 14th and 15th Street area where a few of the historic homes remain along with newer homes and other development including the future home of the St Pete Police Department . Today, we are a diverse community, proud of our history and enjoying life in this quiet neighborhood just steps away from all the excitement of the EDGE District and the rest of Downtown St Pete.
