The Heritage Association, was created with a mission to preserve the rich history and genealogical heritage of African Americans in St. Petersburg, Florida, through research, restoration, preservation, commemoration, and education. It focuses on the cultural heritage of the neighborhoods, community leaders, and landmark businesses, and expands awareness and knowledge of Black St. Petersburg, traci

ng its evolution and progression from the presence of the first African American in 1868 through desegregation and into the Civil Rights Movement (1968). In 2013, the City of St.Petersburg received a $50,000 grant from the Florida Department of State, Division of Historical Resources, to fund the African American Heritage Trail project. Trail stops were chosen that conveyed African-American history and culture in St. In 2014, the African American Heritage Association of St. was incorporated as a nonprofit in the state of Florida and became a 501(c)(3) in 2019.
