We had some special visitors at the aviary today! These three black vultures are sunbathing, which is a behavior to help them get rid of parasites living on their skin and feathers.

Our favorite firework show, native plants! Enjoy this holiday weekend responsibly, and be respectful of the wildlife we share our festivities with.

Here’s a few ways you can help:

🎇 Avoid the fire risk, attend a community firework display
🚮 Pack out all your trash, leave no trace
🦉 Local wildlife can be displaced or harmed by fireworks, if you find an injured animal, always call a wildlife professional for guidance on how to help.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve to help restore native coastal upland habitat! 💚

Together, volunteers planted locally grown native grasses that were propagated by Wise Hands Nursery using seeds collected right here in Boyd Hill Nature Preserve.

This restoration effort strengthens the connection between wetlands and surrounding uplands, improving biodiversity and helping filter stormwater before it reaches Lake Maggiore, Salt Creek, and ultimately Tampa Bay. Every plant put into the ground is another step toward a healthier, more resilient watershed.

We’re grateful to the volunteers, City of St. Petersburg staff, Wise Hands Nursery, Friends of Boyd Hill, and the Tampa Bay Estuary Program’s mini grant program. Thank you for investing your time and energy in protecting the places we all share.

Together, we’re restoring habitat, improving water quality, and making a lasting difference for Tampa Bay.
