Happy from the Wildlife Research Alliance!
Over two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in Galveston, TX we're finally told they were free on June 19, 1865. This may have legally marked the end of slavery in the United States, but attaining true equality remains a battle for Black people and people of color over 150 years later.
Environmental justice remains elusive for communities that have systemically been exploited for profit, such as the people of Flint, MI, Reserve, LA, and the Bronx, NY - all majority non-white areas.
We encourage you to take some time today to reflect on how you can play a role in ending systemic racism and advocating for environmental justice. Slavery may look different today than in the 1860s, but that doesn't mean it's gone.
