Digitizing Nikšić’s Heritage with an Eye on 2030

At Global Digital Heritage, we are proud to have carried out a digitization campaign at the Museum of Nikšić (Montenegro), contributing to the preservation and digital documentation of collections and cultural assets of outstanding historical significance.

This work comes at a particularly exciting moment for the city, as Nikšić has been selected as a European Capital of Culture 2030, recognizing its rich cultural, historical, and creative heritage while opening new opportunities to promote and safeguard its unique legacy.

Collaboration with local museums lies at the heart of Global Digital Heritage’s mission. We believe that protecting humanity’s shared heritage is only possible through strong partnerships with the institutions that preserve and transmit the memory of their communities. By applying advanced 3D digitization and documentation technologies, we help create high-quality digital records that support research, conservation, education, and public accessibility.

Every object, collection, and monument tells a story. Through digital preservation, we help ensure these stories remain accessible for future generations while expanding opportunities for study and engagement worldwide.

We are honored to support the Museum of Nikšić and look forward to contributing to the city's cultural journey toward 2030.

SITE SATURDAY | Jebel al-Buhais Necropolis, UAE 🇦🇪

This week, we highlight Jebel al-Buhais Necropolis in Sharjah, UAE, an extraordinary Bronze Age funerary landscape dating to the Wadi Suq period (c. 2000–1300 BCE) and reused during the Iron Age.

Its subterranean tombs have revealed human remains alongside pottery, bronze weapons, jewellery, steatite vessels, and hundreds of beads, offering a unique window into ancient burial traditions and community life.

Through 3D documentation and digital preservation, these remarkable archaeological contexts can be studied, conserved, and shared with researchers and the public worldwide.

The digital models were created using RealityCapture, with additional processing in Meshlab, Geomagic, and FARO laser scanning technologies.

This week, three members of the Global Digital Heritage team are working in Armenia to conduct an intensive 3D documentation campaign on artifacts recovered from the archaeological site of Dvin, the medieval capital of Armenia.

Using a combination of photogrammetry and structured-light scanning, our team is producing high-resolution digital records of the collection currently housed in the site's dig house. These digital assets will support the long-term preservation, research, accessibility, and dissemination of an important part of Armenia’s cultural heritage.

This activity is carried out within the framework of the AICS ARCHE-TOUR-DEV development cooperation project, implemented by the University of Florence – SAGAS Department for the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport of the Republic of Armenia, under the coordination of the Embassy of Italy in Yerevan.

The work also contributes to the Italian-Armenian Archaeological Mission at Dvin, led by the University of Florence, Yerevan State University, and the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, under the direction of Professors Hamlet Petrosyan and Michele Nucciotti.

Through this collaboration, Global Digital Heritage continues to support the application of advanced digital recording technologies for the documentation, study, conservation, and valorisation of archaeological heritage, ensuring that these irreplaceable cultural resources remain accessible for future generations.

We are grateful to all our local and international collaborators whose expertise and commitment are making this project possible!

We are excited to announce that we are currently working on the digital documentation of the Chongoni Rock Art Area in Malawi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant collections of rock art in Central Africa.

These extraordinary sites provide invaluable insights into the cultural traditions, beliefs, and history of the communities that created them over centuries. The rock paintings found here are of immense importance and have been linked to ancestral rituals aimed at maintaining the vitality of the forest and supporting the health and well-being of these societies.

During the first days of the project, we are delivering training sessions for local participants, including members of the Department of Museums and Monuments and Malawian students. The training covers laser scanning, DSLR digital photography, 3D photogrammetry, GPS data collection, drone operations, and related digital heritage technologies.

We look forward to sharing the results of this remarkable project with you. To stay updated on this and all our other projects, visit gdh.org and follow us on our social media channels.

Global Digital Heritage at the “Primada” Exhibition in Toledo Cathedral

We are delighted to have collaborated on the inauguration of the “Primada” Exhibition, hosted at the historic Toledo Cathedral.

As part of this project, Global Digital Heritage digitized more than 20 artworks and heritage objects featured in the exhibition, including some of the most significant treasures preserved by the Cathedral for centuries. Through this work, we produced highly detailed digital models that contribute to their preservation, research, and accessibility.

In addition, we created three audiovisual productions designed to enhance the visitor experience and provide new perspectives on the exhibition’s remarkable collection.

Projects like this demonstrate how technology can help preserve and share cultural heritage, making it more accessible to present and future generations.

Following our latest post on the heritage documented by Global Digital Heritage in Murcia (Spain), we would like to share several projects connected to the legacy of the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939).

These sites, digitally preserved through 3D documentation and photogrammetry, help us better understand a pivotal period in Spain’s contemporary history that ultimately led to the Franco dictatorship.

By preserving these locations, we contribute to the protection of historical memory and ensure that future generations can continue learning from the past.

Did you know that one of the world’s largest preserved collections of anatomical models of plants is located at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Complutense University of Madrid?

As part of our collaboration with UCM, Global Digital Heritage has launched the first digitization campaign focused on the Collection of Botanical Models.

These fascinating models, created by the German company Brendel in the late 19th century, are an incredible example of scientific and educational heritage.

Through digital preservation and documentation, we are helping protect and share this unique collection with future generations.

The Tabula Hebana is a fragmentary bronze inscription dating to 20 CE, discovered near Magliano in Toscana and currently preserved at the Museo Archeologico e d'Arte della Maremma (MAAM) in Grosseto, Italy.

The inscription records the posthumous honors dedicated to Germanicus and documents important reforms to the Roman electoral system introduced after Augustus, offering valuable insight into the political structure of the early Roman Empire.

This digital model was created by Global Digital Heritage using Agisoft Metashape from 200 photographs. The fragments were digitally separated and reconstructed virtually, allowing the piece to be preserved and studied in greater detail.

With the occasion of the 8th Virtual Archaeology Marathon, GDH President Herbert Maschner presented a replica of the Tabula Hebana to the MAAM as a symbolic gift supporting heritage education and digital preservation.
