"With a deep reverence for those who came before us, I work to remind viewers of a previous time...the memory that we’ve been here before."
Charles Morrison pours this deep perspective into the unique and bold ceramic artworks he's been creating for a decade. These six pieces are part of the exhibition "Rise," on view at our Sightline Gallery at St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport until June 15.
Employing woodfired clay as his primary means of communication, Morrison takes great inspiration from the natural world and its ancient civilizations. He finds himself working to remind us of a forgotten past, encouraging us to remember our ancestors and their traditions, folktales, beliefs, wisdom and guidance. Morrison is an Illinois native who moved to Tampa in 2023, and is wrapping up a multi-year artist-in-residency at the Morean Center for Clay (his solo show there closes this weekend).
"Rise," which also features local artists Luci Westphal, Scott Solary and Letisia Cruz, can be seen in the airport's public corridor (accessible to non-travelers) and in Gates 7-11.
