What if the real impact of cannabis legalization on youth isn't showing up in household surveys but in psychiatric emergency departments?

While household surveys often suggest that teen cannabis use has remained stable following legalization, researchers examining psychiatric emergency visits in Massachusetts found a different story.

A recent study found that youth experienced the most dramatic increases in cannabis use and cannabis use disorder among patients presenting for psychiatric emergencies after recreational cannabis sales began.

Hear directly from the researchers behind the study, Dr. Cheryl Foo and Toby Raybould, in our Speaker Series, Not All Kids Are Alright: Pediatric and Youth Emergency Visits and Hospitalizations after Cannabis Legalization: https://youtu.be/yL1g4UyMWB0

In psychiatric emergency room patients, cannabis use rises after legalization of recreational sales in Massachusetts, but the largest changes are seen amongst adolescents rather than adults. After legalization, adolescent cannabis use increased from 5% to 17%, and cannabis-related disorders rose from 3% to 12%.

🚨 Emerging substances are reshaping workplace and military drug policies.

The U.S. Coast Guard recently announced new restrictions on kratom and expanded testing for psilocin, the psychoactive compound found in “magic mushrooms.” These changes reflect growing concerns about safety, impairment, and workforce readiness as new substances continue to emerge outside traditional drug-testing panels.

⚠️ Kratom, while legal in many states, has been linked to serious health risks including addiction, psychosis, liver damage, and overdose.
⚠️ Psilocin can cause disorientation, paranoia, and distorted perception that may compromise safety-sensitive duties.

The landscape is changing rapidly — from kratom to delta-8-THC to novel synthetics — and organizations are being challenged to keep policies current with today’s evolving substance use trends.

New research shows parental cannabis use is rising rapidly in the U.S., with millions of children now living in households where cannabis is used regularly. Daily cannabis use among parents is now more common than daily alcohol use.

As cannabis use becomes more normalized, continued research and education on family and child well-being remain important.
