Amelia is one of our Gabe Vargo grant recipients. She is an Environmental Studies and Biology major at Eckerd College and a rising Senior. In the photo, she is actually using one of Gabe‘s old spotting scopes that were donated to Eckerd! In addition to stewarding, she is creating a GIS map of all the skimmer colonies in the Tampa Bay area and how they have shifted throughout the past decade!

EGMONT KEY BIRD SANCTUARY TOUR BY BOAT!
with
Friends of the Tampa Bay National Wildlife Refuges
Saturday June 27, 4:30-8:30pm (rain date Sunday June 28)
Reservations and prepayment required

Join us for our annual tour of the Egmont Key Bird Sanctuary Tour with a stop at the Ft Dade ruins, Lighthouse, and hopefully a Black Skimmer colony. The Egmont Key Ferry will take us around the south tip of Egmont Key to see the areas where birds are nesting. (These areas are not accessible by foot and only seen by visitors with boats). The chicks from our Laughing gulls, Royal terns, & Sandwich terns should be out on the beaches exploring. Brown Pelicans, White ibis, and American Oystercatchers can also nest on the islands. If for some reason Egmont isn’t open (which it should be), we will do the tour all by boat.

Space is limited and this event sells out quickly.

Meet Gale, a rising junior at USF! He is another of our St. Pete Audubon's Gabe Vargo Grant recipients. He is stewarding 100 hours and doing research on kleptoparasitism (also called piracy). At our skimmer colonies - this is most often when Laughing Gulls steal fish 🐟 from Black Skimmers, when skimmer males bring fish to females for mating or when either s*x is trying to bring fish to chicks. Gale will help determine how common this is!

🩷 Thank you to everyone who has donated to St. Pete Audubon or is a member.

Meet Rowan, a rising senior at USF! He is one of our St. Pete Audubon's Gabe Vargo Grant recipients. He is stewarding 100 hours and doing research on how long males incubate compared to females!
🩷 Thank you to everyone who has donated to St. Pete Audubon or is a member.
🩷 You are making this stewardship and research possible.

He and I have put out 2 cameras at St. Pete Beach (Redington will be soon). These motion triggered cameras are there to primarily monitor night-time intrusions/predators, but they might also help with his research.

Pete Plage led a marathon 3-hour field trip at Ft DeSoto this past Tuesday, covering areas around Bay Pier, East Beach, and the fort. The Nandays were particularly entertaining as they investigated cavities in snags. An interesting group of three Loggerhead Shrikes appeared to be building a nest amongst dead twigs, and a pair of Gray Kingbirds, flycatchers known to nest in the park, perched together briefly. Migrant highlights were Rose-breasted Grosbeaks and a pair of Tennessee Warblers, one of which dropped to the ground for a few moments, allowing for a good view. We saw close to 30 species, including the Smooth-Billed and Groove-Bill Anis, Bald Eagles, male and female Indigo Buntings, Royal Terns, and a Cardinal whose song was as striking as his brilliant color. Thanks to Donna Sperber for the photos and recap!
