TBEP and partners have been monitoring seagrasses in Tampa Bay since the 90s. From our in-the-water transect survey sites and from the SWFWMD’s aerial photo mapping project, it's safe to say we know a lot about seagrasses—where they're getting healthier, where they might be in trouble, which species grow where, etc. But we aren't omniscient. That's where you come in. If you've noticed changes in the seagrass at a location in the bay, we want to hear from you. Especially if it's somewhere you've been visiting for years.

In fact, in direct response to angler reports of changes to seagrass cover, we're adding a new transect survey location for the first time since we started monitoring seagrasses. When we got these reports, we didn't have a survey site near enough to know what was going on in this new location to be able to address the anglers' concerns. So, we did what we do best, we partnered with Suncoast Waterkeeper and the City of Holmes Beach Clean Water Committee to set up a new transect survey site to be able to track changes to seagrass cover. It'll take a few years to identify changes at the new site, but we can compare seagrass cover and make-up at this new site to the rest of the bay this season.

Have you noticed changes in seagrass cover or make-up somewhere in the bay? While we can't set-up new transect sites at every location (we wish we could!), we will look into it. It's possible we already know or can infer what's going on in your spot, and it's possible we don't and will want to investigate.

It's not too late to prepare!🌀 And while you prepare yourself, you can also prepare in a way that protects our whole community and the bay we love.

Here’s how you can keep you and your loved ones, your property, and this place we call home safe:

🏡 Secure your property: Clearing gutters, trimming trees, and securing outdoor items helps prevent debris and pollutants from washing into storm drains and ultimately into the bay, protecting water quality and aquatic life.
💧 Protect water quality: Avoid using fertilizers or pesticides right before a storm to reduce runoff pollution.
🎒 Create an emergency kit: Include essentials like water, food, medications, and important documents. Consider adding a WAG bag!
📳 Stay informed: Follow local news updates and announcements from local authorities and emergency responders.

Woo-wee! We sure had a blast celebrating a big milestone for the Tampa Bay Environmental Restoration Fund last night!

Through TBERF, we have granted over $10 million to more than 100 projects—all in service to our estuary! This grant program has had a measurable impact on protecting and restoring our watershed’s native habitats, as well as understanding the estuary through research.

If you're scratching your head right now then you are EXACTLY who we wanted this post to find. 🙌

🌊 Stormwater = the liquid that runs off of buildings, roads, and other people-made things that drains into waterbodies after precipitation (e.g., rain); often polluted by chemicals that washed off the roads or lawns it flowed over.
♥️ Stewardship = caring for our natural resources through sustainable and responsible practices

🌅 Stormwater Stewardship = doing your part to keep pollutants, pet p**p, trash, and other waste out of stormwater, including supporting stormwater-related programs

🤝 Welcome to the in-crowd.

Today is June 1 and you know what that means—it's time to spend more time relaxing and having fun instead of fertilizing your lawn. 😎 It's time to Be Floridian.🦩So skip the yardwork and go play!

Residential fertilizer restrictions go into effect today to limit excess nutrients from washing away with the summer rains. Runoff carries the nutrients from your yard to the bay, where they worsen water quality and hurt wildlife habitat. Learn more about why summer is for fun, not fertilizing, on our website here: https://ow.ly/j4th50Z5ign

Help us improve water quality and create habitat for many fish and wildlife species on June 5 as we restore the Keen wetland in the northeastern section of Duette Preserve. (What a great way to celebrate American Wetlands Month!) Afterward, we will tour the site and discuss how this TBERF-funded restoration project is designed to improve the water that eventually flows into Lake Manatee. Lunch will be provided by the Tampa Bay Estuary Program.

This opportunity is suitable for volunteers of all ages.

**Please dress for full sun outdoors and wear closed-toe shoes that you do not mind getting wet or muddy. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear a hat. We will provide all tools for planting.**

Blue and green spaces have a powerfully positive impact on our health. Blue spaces are particularly beneficial to our mental health—just listen to Chris Clark's compelling words about SCUBA diving. But access to and feeling welcome in these places differs for different people.

In "A Splash of Color: Getting Black in the Water", Dr. Hillary Van D**e showcases how black and brown people in Tampa Bay are overcoming the barriers they face using blue and green spaces and the positive impact these places have on their lives. Watch the full film here: https://ow.ly/cxNB50Z4giH

How does being in or near blue spaces affect you?
