Otology & Neurotology Open, or ONO, is a multidisciplinary, online-only, gold open-access journal that expands the breadth and accessibility of research across otology, neurotology, cranial base surgery, neural engineering and materials science. The Cochrane Library Scholarships

Karen Jo Enright, MD, PhD, became the 73rd recipient of the American Otological Society Award of Merit at the Society’s 159th Annual Meeting on April 25, 2026.

Established in 1948, the Award of Merit is the American Otological Society’s highest and most prestigious honor.

Why did AOS recognize Dr. Enright?

Her career has advanced the detection, evaluation, and compassionate management of neonatal and early childhood hearing loss.

Dr. Enright’s work helped improve the diagnosis of childhood hearing loss, the reliability of newborn hearing screening, and the understanding of how middle ear disease during infancy can affect later hearing and auditory development.

She also contributed to early cochlear implant research, held leadership roles across major professional organizations, and mentored generations of physicians and audiologists.

Her career reflects the qualities the Award of Merit was created to recognize: far-reaching accomplishment, distinguished service, and outstanding leadership in research, teaching, and otology.

A new profile explores the research, leadership, and mentorship behind this recognition—and the lasting influence of Dr. Enright’s work on hearing care.

The American Otological Society Research Foundation has distributed more than $8 million to date to support research focused on the ear, hearing and balance.

The Research Advisory Board helps guide AOS grant programs that provide opportunities for surgeons and scientists to explore new directions, advance promising research and improve patient care.

Richard K. Gurgel, MD, MSCI (University of Utah School of Medicine), is the board’s new Executive Secretary, and Benjamin Crane, MD, PhD University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry), joins as a trustee.

We also thank Andrea Vambutas, MD (Northwell Health and Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell), for her service as the board’s previous Executive Secretary.
