The American Otological Society is accepting abstracts for its 160th Annual Meeting, April 9–11, 2027, in Seattle, Washington.

Abstract submissions are open September 1 through October 22, 2026.

Awards available include:
• Two Resident Research Travel Awards for outstanding clinical or basic science manuscripts
• A cash award for the best presentation from research performed in a private practice setting

Abstracts must be submitted by October 22. Additional eligibility requirements apply for the awards.

In recognition of Women in Medicine Month, the American Otological Society is celebrating women who have helped shape AOS across generations.

The story includes important firsts in membership, women who have served as president, and staff whose service has helped sustain the Society across decades.

Dorothy Wolff, PhD, became the first woman invited to join AOS as an Associate Member in 1961. Dr. LaVonne Bergstrom became the first woman Full Member in 1977.

Otology & Neurotology Open (ONO) June 2026 has several important articles worth reviewing.

We asked Editor-in-Chief Michael E. Hoffer, MD, to select two to highlight.

Postoperative Complications Related to Bone-Conduction Hearing Devices: A Comprehensive Evaluation at a Single Institution

A retrospective review of 187 patients at Vanderbilt Health found skin issues with some percutaneous implants and some pain and magnet-related issues with transcutaneous devices. Overall complication rates were low, supporting bone-conduction hearing devices as a valuable option for patients.

Effectiveness of Intratympanic Lidocaine and Dexamethasone in Idiopathic Tinnitus: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial

In a randomized, double-blind trial of 127 patients at Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, dexamethasone, lidocaine and saline placebo were compared. All three groups showed a small average improvement, but there was no significant difference between treatments.

The study highlights the importance of publishing well-designed studies with negative results.

The American Otological Society Research Foundation has distributed more than $8 million to date to support research focused on the ear, hearing and balance.

The Research Advisory Board helps guide AOS grant programs that provide opportunities for surgeons and scientists to explore new directions, advance promising research and improve patient care.
