Did you know that May is Better Hearing and Speech Month? Our Home Care team offers Speech Therapy services for a variety of diagnoses and reasons! Stay tuned to our month long series of short posts on what speech/language/hearing disorders are and how they impact your safety at home and independence in daily tasks.

Team member highlight!
Ryan, one of our Speech Language Pathologists, has been working in Health Care for over 10 years and with Bon Secours for over 5 years. Her special interests include adult language disorders and swallowing disorders. Over her years in home health, she has been a top patient advocate and worked diligently to provide good help and quality services to the patients she serves and their families. "Keeping patients as independent as possible and including their caregivers in the treatment process are two important parts of my job. Watching a patient progress in even the smallest of ways is such a rewarding experience. Seeing the way caregivers rise up to help their loved ones once given the tools they need is always encouraging to witness."

Thank you for your hard work, Ryan!

Last week we shared a post about factors that can put you at risk for falling.
Here are some ways to modify your environment and behaviors to keep your risk for falls down.

Preventing falls at home or in the community is key to reducing risk of serious injuries that could result in pain or trips to the emergency room. Here are some great ways to decrease your risk of falling!
1. Stay physically active to keep your muscles strong and help with maintaining good balance.
2. Fall proof your home by making sure rugs are secured with adhesive backing or removed, pathways are free of clutter, and your most utilized items are kept close by.
3. Check medication labels for known side effects of medications and monitor the affect they have when taken.
4. Be sure to stand up slowly and steady yourself before taking those first few steps to ensure you have your balance and do not become lightheaded or dizzy.
5. Limit alcohol consumption to prevent falls from an unsteady gait when intoxicated.

Unsure of where to start on your journey towards reducing falls? Contact your primary care provider (P*P) and request a consult with a licensed Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Speech Therapist. Our team can assess your home environment, review your medications, assess for safety awareness and help create a home exercise program to keep you independent and safe in your home and community. Bon Secours Home Health boasts a team of PT and PTAs, OTs and OTAs, and ST to help keep you safe and independent in your home.

Today is National Doctor’s Day. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our community physician partners for allowing us to be of good help and service to their patients. The first Doctor’s Day was observed in 1933 in Winder, Georgia and in 1991, President George H.W. Bush made it a National Day. Being a physician can be a physically demanding and highly stressful career that requires physicians to be excellent at multitasking while providing crucial attention to detail with a caring heart.

Prediabetes typically occurs without symptoms or warning signs, but it helps to know if you do have prediabetes so you can stop it in its tracks and avoid developing Type 2 diabetes. Even though prediabetes is not the same as Type 2 diabetes, having too much sugar in your blood can damage your organs - especially your kidneys. Learn more about the warning signs and steps to reverse pre-diabetes.

You could have prediabetes, but you may not know it. More than one in three adults in the United States have prediabetes.
