The food we provide is always free of charge, with no expectations. This kind gentleman, however, insisted on an impromptu poem in exchange. 🄰

We never know how our actions may touch others.

On a recent walk, while we were handing out sandwiches on Bourbon Street, a woman approached us after walking out of a daiquiri shop with a group of friends, who were all eating slices of pizza. The woman told us she had seen what we were doing and that it meant something to her. Her daughter, she said, had been living on the streets before dying of a drug overdose a couple years ago. Then she showed us a picture of her daughter, who appeared to be in her 20s and still full of promise.

As the group was walking away, the woman handed us money and said, "I see you."

What we wish she could see is the impact of her kindness, which has already paid to feed others struggling with life on the streets.

Last nights walk may have been rainy and cold, but it turned bright the moment we ran into one of our favorite Homies and his two sweet pets. He was making sure they stayed warm, even though he was out there in shorts! He happily shared that both animals had been spayed and neutered since we last saw them. Such great news!
All three of them deserve a better life, and the love between them is so clear. We bring them all food and will be handing him pants next walk. Every bit of support we give helps him care for them even more. And truly, it all starts with you, our wonderful friends and supporters. Thank you all for everything you do! 🧔

Generosity can take many forms. In addition to our friends and supporters, we find it among our homies. Some decline food so others can eat or look after friends' animals when they're in a jam. Others share their stories, smiles, and friendship.

Today, we give thanks for such gifts -- and for the ongoing support of friends such as you. Happy Thanksgiving!

Last year, while doing The Brown Bag Project in New Orleans, we met this man and his puppy, Scuba Steve. Since then, he’s rescued a kitten, whom he named Shaniqua, from a dumpster. People aren’t always what they seem. He’s very kind. He tells us he loves and appreciates us. He only accepts food when he absolutely needs it, saying he doesn’t want others to go hungry, and he always makes sure Scuba Steve and Shaniqua have food, water, and lots of attention. We consider him a friend and are so grateful to all of you who make what we do possible. 🧔🐾

We’re Back!

After a hiatus due to health challenges, personal loss, and relocation, the Brown Bag Project is thrilled to resume full operations, right here in the vibrant heart of New Orleans.

With so many people experiencing homelessness in this city, the need for help is greater than ever. And while our efforts may seem small in scale, remember: You don’t have to be big to make a big difference.

Last night, we saw almost no homeless people downtown, which is where we typically hand out most of our food. Chalk it up to a combination of factors:

* A cold and windy night, which usually sends people to their "spots" early
* Stepped-up police enforcement in recent months
* Setup for a big local event, pushing people out of their places in the park

So, with backpacks still full of food, we started exploring other parts of the city, looking for people in need. We found plenty.

In one spot, we gave a friendly couple a bag of dog food and water for the two cuddly "protectors" sleeping with them.

Elsewhere, we found nearly a dozen people sleeping under a freeway overpass. There, we met a man who'd had a suitcase, with nearly everything he owned inside, stolen the day before. He was cold but in good spirits and was thrilled to get something as simple as a pair of gloves.

In total, our walk took us through eight neighborhoods and stretched for nearly nine miles. And though we hand out food to
many "regulars" after five years, almost everyone was a stranger. At least, they were. Some will now seem like old friends the next time we meet.

Thank you all again for helping us in our mission. We couldn’t do this without you! 🧔

When the "feels like" temperature drops below 40 degrees during the winter, Pinellas County opens "cold night shelters." The shelters open up in local churches and community agencies, such as the Boys and Girls Club, and are staffed by volunteers. People can even catch a free ride to and from on the bus.

As you might expect, the shelters - 10 across the county - are open this week. Yet, we still find many people sleeping outside on these cold nights. Some have too many belongings to bring to a shelter, have anxieties about sleeping in close quarters with so many strangers, or stay away for other reasons. They always seem surprised - and grateful - to see us handing out food on these cold nights. Yes, the walks are uncommonly "brisk," but how can we stay home when we know they'll be sleeping outside? As Mimi often tells people, "If you'll be out, so will we."

"Being there" for our homies is extremely important, especially on nights when other charities may nor have the resources to provide their usual services. Thank you, as always, for enabling us to help!
