Great time with Osceola fundamental this afternoon! We had tons of biodiversity in our trawl and the students learned all about adaptations of animals in our seagrass beds. After lunch we dove into a citizen science microplastic lab!

We had a great two days with Northside Christian! We had beautiful weather, found a bunch of animals in the estuary, and even had some dolphins join us by the dock! 🐬

It’s not uncommon for us over here at TBW to ask students what animal makes the spiral shell and for them to say “hermit crabs”. So today we are tackling the misconception that hermit crabs make shells. the creator of these spiral shells is actually a sea snail! As the snail grows, the shell grow with it; when the snail dies, hermit crabs will move into the shell. As the hermit crab grows bigger, it not only will molt its hard exoskeleton that covers its legs and the outside of its body, it will also look for a larger shell to move into.

Jumping for joy because IT’S LEAP DAY! We are making the most of this extra day over here at Estuary EDventures with a squid and plankton program! Fifth graders from Ridgecrest elementary learned a lot about squid adaptations and plankton, even making their own plankton for our plankton race!

What are you doing this leap day?

The fun doesn’t stop after the field trip does! Tonight we brought our plankton encounter lab to Northwest Elementary school for their science night! We got some pretty rave reviews, one student even said “it’s like magic” ✨
