Making Homelessness Rare. Brief. One-Time. Throughout 22 Counties in Florida and now Puerto Rico The history of St. Vincent de Paul CARES (SVdP CARES).

Vincent de Paul begins over 185 years ago in Paris, France when a young college student, Frederic Ozanam, and a group of friends visited the homes of those who were poor. They brought them food, clothing, support, friendship, and eventually formed the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in honor of the saint, an “Apostle of Charity,” who lived 400 years before. Today, over 800,000 worldwide members pre

serve the spirit of St. Vincent de Paul and the charity work of Frederic Ozanam, including those within St. Founded in 1985 by local SVdP Catholic conferences, the “Society of St. Vincent de Paul South Pinellas, Inc. (SVdPSP)” was tasked with providing spiritual and material support to people in need in Pinellas County. As those needs increased, a Community Thrift Store was built in the nineties, and later the purchase of the Center of Hope temporary shelter followed by the Food Center and CARE Center night shelter in 2006. By 2017, SVdPSP had expanded exponentially and now does business as SVdP CARES. And from its humble beginnings serving Pinellas county, SVdP CARES is now ending homelessness in 16 counties, continuing to fulfill the vision of Frederic Ozanam. SVdP CARES is an independent 501(c)(3) organization, separate from St. Vincent de Paul USA.

🇺🇸 “It’s kind of like heaven on Earth … a little piece of heaven.”

Those were the words of Army Veteran Michael Miller, the first Veteran to move into SVdP CARES’ newly renovated North Tampa shelter.

Thank you to the Tampa Bay Times for sharing the story of this important new chapter for Veterans in our community.

Opened last week, the revitalized campus provides 60 beds across six buildings, along with three warm meals a day, clothing, supportive services and a pathway to permanent housing — all at no cost to the Veterans we serve.

We are incredibly grateful to Hillsborough County and everyone who helped make this transformation possible, and to the Tampa Bay Times for helping shine a light on the work being done to ensure Veterans have a safe, dignified place to call home.

💛 Gratitude in Action 💛

A heartfelt thank you to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County for awarding SVdP CARES a $5,000 emergency, out-of-cycle grant to support breakfast services in Charlotte County.

After the unexpected loss of a major food donation, this funding ensures we can continue providing nutritious breakfast meals to our shelter guests and neighbors in need for at least the next three months.

Moments like these remind us how powerful community partnerships can be. We are deeply grateful for the Community Foundation's support and commitment to helping ensure that no one in our community goes without the nourishment and care they deserve.
