Eastern Screech Owl Children’s Educational Workshop a Great Success
On April 18, 2026, the Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association hosted a Children’s Educational Workshop on Eastern Screech Owls at Coconut Park in St. Petersburg. The event welcomed 20 neighborhood children, providing a fun, hands-on learning experience focused on wildlife and conservation.
Participants learned about the importance of Eastern Screech Owls and their role in the ecosystem, while enjoying interactive activities throughout the day. The kids had a great time building owl nesting boxes, painting owl rocks, and creating a variety of crafts, making the event both educational and memorable.
A highlight of the workshop was the live owl presentation by Donna Conroy, Mike Stott, and Jelysbeth Bobadilla of Boyd Hill Nature Park, who brought two Eastern Screech Owls for the children to observe up close. We also extend our appreciation to Lara Milligan of the UF/IFAS Extension for leading an engaging and informative program on these fascinating birds.
This event was made possible through the generous support of many community partners. We gratefully acknowledge the City of St. Petersburg for funding this program and providing the use of Coconut Park, along with contributions from Tyrone Chick-fil-A, West St. Pete Home Depot, and Carroll Supply.
Special thanks to Ray Poynor, who provided all of the owl box materials and made the project possible by carefully precutting and predrilling every piece for assembly.
We also thank the Officers and Board Members of the Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association for their time, effort, and dedication in planning and facilitating this successful community event.
The Old Pasadena Neighborhood Association is proud to offer programs like this that bring neighbors together while inspiring the next generation through education, creativity, and hands-on experiences.
