Do modern Christians value JUSTICE more than JESUS?
A recent Barna study found an alarming trend among churchgoers.
37% of Christians believe promoting justice is more important in world missions than preaching Jesus’s good news.
That means if forced to choose, these believers would likely prefer:
💧a clean water project over a church plant,
🍜 a soup kitchen over evangelistic missionaries, and
⛑️ a charity drive over a strategic gospel outreach.
This problem isn't imaginary. We’ve even seen ‘Christian’ NGOs promise never to publicly preach the gospel—offering communities physical relief while ignoring their eternal destinies.
What does Jesus say? Is charity really more important than evangelism?
Here's the truth.
𝙅𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚—𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝘼𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙂𝙤𝙖𝙡
Jesus commands us to walk in works of justice.
As He said in Matthew 5:16,
“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works” (ESV).
But the ultimate goal of charity work is not temporary relief, but salvation—“that they may see your good works and they may glorify your Father who is in Heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
No Christian wants to send people well-dressed and full-bellied to Hell.
But that's exactly what happens when we prize charity over the good news.
After all, only the message of the cross saves eternal souls—"the gospel...is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16 ESV)
Then we must ask: "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?" (Romans 10:14 ESV)
There's a world out there searching for hope only Jesus provides.
Don't just hand them a bag of rice.
Together, we can send them the good news that can transform their lives forever.
Will you answer the call?
