Do modern Christians value JUSTICE more than JESUS?

A recent Barna study found an alarming trend among churchgoers.

37% of Christians believe promoting justice is more important in world missions than preaching Jesus’s good news.

That means if forced to choose, these believers would likely prefer:

💧a clean water project over a church plant,
🍜 a soup kitchen over evangelistic missionaries, and
⛑️ a charity drive over a strategic gospel outreach.

This problem isn't imaginary. We’ve even seen ‘Christian’ NGOs promise never to publicly preach the gospel—offering communities physical relief while ignoring their eternal destinies.

What does Jesus say? Is charity really more important than evangelism?

Here's the truth.

𝙅𝙚𝙨𝙪𝙨 𝘾𝙤𝙢𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙅𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚—𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙉𝙊𝙏 𝘼𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙐𝙡𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙂𝙤𝙖𝙡

Jesus commands us to walk in works of justice.

As He said in Matthew 5:16,

“…let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works” (ESV).

But the ultimate goal of charity work is not temporary relief, but salvation—“that they may see your good works and they may glorify your Father who is in Heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

No Christian wants to send people well-dressed and full-bellied to Hell.

But that's exactly what happens when we prize charity over the good news.

After all, only the message of the cross saves eternal souls—"the gospel...is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes" (Romans 1:16 ESV)

Then we must ask: "How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching?" (Romans 10:14 ESV)

There's a world out there searching for hope only Jesus provides.

Don't just hand them a bag of rice.

Together, we can send them the good news that can transform their lives forever.

Will you answer the call?

Jesus wants to anoint you as His witness, filling you to overflow with the restorative power of the Holy Spirit.

In the book of Acts, the church regularly sought the Lord for fresh outpourings of the Holy Spirit’s power for effective ministry (see Acts 1-2, Acts 4:23-31, etc).

We should do the same today!

1️⃣ Do you regularly seek the Lord to empower you as His witness?

2️⃣ If not, why not?

3️⃣ Will you commit to cultivating the habit?

4️⃣ How would your average day change if you walked in the assurance of God’s power and love?

🙏📓 We invite you to take a moment to pray, meditate, and privately journal your thoughts.

God never called us to declare whatever spiritual ideas pop into our little hearts.

Instead, He specifically called us to “preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15).

The gospel—the message of salvation and reconciliation through Jesus—is the great force behind every genuine harvest of souls.

It alone is “the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16 NKJV).

No other message can save souls, transform lives, restore rebellious societies, and defeat the Kingdom of Darkness! Then what a tragedy if we fail to preach it!

As we invade with light, we must lay every other message to the side and preach the gospel with laser focus.

Tragically, very few have learned to prioritize this all-important message.

All too often, Christians sidetrack the lost with other themes, riffing passionately on pet doctrines, non-essentials, cheap inspirational talk, and spiritual self-help.

They speak at length about how to improve your marriage, how to get more money, how to improve your family relationships, how to receive divine healing, and so much more.

While some of these teachings may have value for sincere believers, it’s usually misguided to preach such things to the unsaved.

God didn’t call us to go into all the world and preach good marriage, good finances, and good family—

He called us to go into all the world and preach good news!

As Oswald J. Smith declared, “Our work is to preach the gospel, and we must not be sidetracked!”

Then let us get to the work, and never allow Satan to divert our mission strategy again.
