Minnesota Elk Surveys are underway!

Our annual elk surveys are underway! 🛩

🔎 Each winter (typically in January-February), Minnesota DNR flies aerial surveys to collect a minimum count of elk within our three established elk herds. This data is used to inform future elk management and harvest regulations.

🧭 Surveys are conducted in Northwest Minnesota. Two of the herds found in this part of the state are the Kittson Central and Grygla herds. The state also shares an international elk herd, the Caribou-Vita herd, which moves between Minnesota and Manitoba, Canada.

⛅ DNR pilots will fly fixed-wing aircraft on both sides of the border during daylight hours at an altitude of approximately 200 to 300 feet, with wildlife staff in the aircraft counting the elk from above.

❄️ Around eight inches of snow cover is required to do these surveys. The contrast between the white snow and the dark shape of the elk makes it easier to tell the difference between bull and cow (male and female) elk from the air. Bull elk will maintain their antlers until early April!

Not all elk are equally vulnerable to CWD. Some elk have a gene that may help them resist chronic wasting disease. Scientists are studying how this could shape the future of elk herds.
