Learn about challenges and successes for peacebuilding on the ground in Colombia, a country that has known decades of violence from guerrillas, paramilitaries, and narco-traffickers. The J-Term IEX Course, Community Peacebuilding, will bring Gusties to Colombia where they will learn about the history of violence in Colombia, the national Peace Accords and their implementation, and the struggle to build local cultures of peace in Colombia and to deal with the trauma of past violence. Some of the highlights of this trip include working directly with community partners in Medellin to gain in-depth knowledge of peace work on the ground, a once in a lifetime opportunity to be guests of an indigenous community known by our host organization - Peace and Hope and Memoria Indigena, experiencing the unique beauty of Colombia in mountains, coast, and Tayrona National Park and earning a January credit and fulfilling the Challenge Seminar requirement, as well as PJCS and LALACS credit. The J-Term IEX Course, Identity, Resistance, and Liberation, will take Gusties to Vietnam to explore national identity formation, armed resistance and movements of national liberation in Vietnam. Some of the highlights of this course include exploring many different war-related sites, engaging in many different cultural activities, including a traditional water puppet show, a Vietnamese cooking class, a visit to a palm sugar plantation, a tour of a "people's" art museum, and an informal evening with college-aged Vietnamese students, and the course fulfills a January credit and a GLAFC credit. The J-Term IEX Course, a Winter's Pause, will bring Gusties to Holden Village where they will experience the sacred space that is cultivated through communal singing and moving while exploring choices that support individual wellbeing and balance. Some of the highlights of this trip include being able to earn an ARTSC and WELBG credit, trying cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, sledding, winter hiking, and igloo-making in the incredible beauty of the Cascade mountains, attending a variety of concerts, enjoying chances for music-making, and traveling from Minneapolis to Washington State by Amtrak. The J-Term IEX Course, Placing Valencia, will bring Gusties to Spain where they will spend January immersed in the culture of this exciting Spanish city. You will also have the opportunity to engage with local community organizations and companies, including work at a Daycare Center, elderly assistance, visiting homeless people, studying support for children at risk of social exclusion, and reforestation projects. Climate change is reshaping life and landscapes on Earth, and nowhere is this more clear than in the South American country of Bolivia. The J-Term IEX Course, Climate Change and Conservation in a Changing Land, will bring Gusties to Bolivia where they will learn about modern conservation challenges in a land of tradition and explore the impacts of climate change from the steamy Amazon rainforest to the melting Andean glaciers. Some of the highlights of this trip include fishing for piranhas, climbing a volcano, finding 700-year-old mummies in a dry mountain cave, speaking with indigenous leaders, climate scientists, and government officials as they respond to a changing climate and visiting a land with one of the greatest species and cultural diversities in the world. Study Away can be Domestic! You can have a great and enriching experience without traveling to another continent. NSE offers many opportunities for study away in the United States, nearby US Territories, and Canada. While international COVID-19 restrictions continue to change, this program could allow for a study away opportunity with less anxiety about significant program changes.
