No photos because it was simply too nasty. The abscess on Capri’s left jaw actually ruptured sometime today. Steve cleaned it and treated it this evening. The larger abscess on his right jaw is beginning to rupture. We’re hoping it will rupture over night or tomorrow so it will drain and give him some relief. He’s not eating or drinking much due to the pain but is grazing some on the soft wet grass. We gave him another dose of Banamine that will hopefully help give him some pain relief.

Applied treatment for the rain rot on his back, applied medication to his wounds, cleaned his eyes and nose, warm compresses to the large abscess on his right jaw to help it rupture and drain and cleaned the abscess that has ruptured. It breaks my heart that this little guy is so sick and has been so neglected.

Capri took his freedom ride home today. It was a long 2 1/2 hour trip for the little guy but we finally made it. After a drink of water, a nibble of hay and a stroll around his quarantine area he decided it was safe enough to take a roll. He’s nervous and skiddish about being caught but is fine once we do. With some love and attention it won’t be long before he will come running to us. He’s very head shy, to the point we believe he may have been abused, but he’s discovering he likes having his forehead gently rubbed. He seems to be having an issue with his back leg. We’re hoping he’s just tired and stiff from the 2 1/2 hour ride. We will keep checking on him tonight and monitor it. We medicated several small wounds on his body and discovered two large abscesses on his jaws. One has slightly ruptured, the other hasn’t. We gave him some Banamine and after a bit he began munching on hay. He doesn’t seem interested in grain or treats at all. We don’t know if it’s because he’s sick or if he’s never been given any. We will let him rest and get settled into his new environment tonight and see if we can clean him up some and apply warm compresses to those abscesses tomorrow to give him some relief.

Capri is safe! I would like to thank the four people who donated to help us save him from slaughter. Between the $100 recieved in your donations, $100 in donations from horse lovers in a group I’m in and the use of a cattle trailer that the kill buyer approves of (no dividers and no ramp) which spared us a $375 delivery fee, we were able to offset our intial OOP expenses of $1200 by $575 and will be heading out to pick Capri up today and bring him home. Steve and I are so grateful for each of you that donated to help lighten our load to save this little guy. THANK YOU!

Our rescue is Hope for Hooves. We are new at this but have rescued three horses from a kill pen in Asheboro, NC since May. We have provided them much needed veterinary care, medications, nutritional supplementation, farrier services and a lot of love and attention to clean them up and nurse them back to healthy and thriving horses. One was a 14 y/o Thoroughbred who won 9 races and birthed 4 foals before being retired and ending up on her way to slaughter. Two of them were unhandled weanlings who were covered in filth, sick, afraid and untrusting when they arrived. They now are all over us wanting love and attention because they’ve learned not all people are bad.

Capri is a 29” mini pony gelding that has ended up in that same kill pen two hours away from us. We want to save Capri from being shipped to slaughter. We want to give him a home where he will be loved, cared for, and enjoy the attention of children who will want to come spend time with him. Children love the horses but sometimes find the bigger ones a bit intimidating. Capri is the perfect size for them.

We’re seeking assistance in saving Capri’s life. We are trying to raise funds to help cover his bail amount of $785 and transportation cost of $375. For each $20 donation made to save Capri from being shipped to slaughter, if you will send me your shipping address in a private message, I will send you one of these horseshoe bracelets in honor of your contribution. You can donate at the link below using your PayPal account, debit or credit card. Thank you for your help to save Capri’s life.
