It's again, and Under One Roof needs your support! As a program of Sub-Saharan African Youth and Family Services in MN, we have been supporting the African community of the Twin Cities by providing free classes in sewing, weaving, and fiber arts for over a decade. The majority of our instructors and teacher aides are volunteers, and all of our classes are offered free of charge. All materials for classes are provided free of charge thanks to the generous donations of fabric, yarn, and other fiber arts supplies from Twin Cities community members. And of course, Under One Roof and SAYFSM have received financial support & grants from city and state programs, local foundations and churches over the years.
Even with all of that support, there are still inescapable costs that can only be covered through financial contributions from generous people like you. If you give today, your money will be used to restock our thread and elastic supply. Lately we’ve had to use serger thread in our machines, and while it’s the best solution we had available, serger thread is weaker than all-purpose thread and it leaves a lot more lint in sewing machines, which puts extra stress on our machines. If you donate $25 today, we can buy five large spools of good-quality thread now and save money on future sewing repair costs. And elastic, we need more elastic! We have several classes working on sewing skirts and pajama pants, and we’re going through elastic like crazy. If you can spare $18, we can buy a *50 yard* spool of elastic, which will be enough for at least 40 or 45 skirts! If you can donate more, that’s amazing. If you can only spare a few bucks, that’s awesome too. It all adds up, and today we’re hoping it will add up to $500 in donations. That should be enough to keep us supplied with thread and elastic well into 2025.
And if you just can’t manage a financial donation right now, but you want to support our work, please consider volunteering! We always need help in the classroom, and we’ve got plenty of non-classroom work that needs doing too. Send us a message, and our program coordinator will fol
