The Sudd Women Outreach Project - SWOP Reaching out to South Sudanese and African women and children to build a strong new American families in the Greater State of Minnesota metropolitan areas

The South Sudanese Women and Children Outreach Society of Minnesota (SSWCOSM) was founded in January 2013 by Nyakade Tot and Steve Johnson. Nyakade Tot is a South Sudanese American woman living in Minnesota where she was a victim of domestic violence and isolation. In 2010, Nyakade organized a support group of South Sudanese women and sisters from the African community at large. They realized that

the prevalence and fear of domestic violence was increasing within refugees and immigrants families, preventing them from being fully active members in their communities. The purpose of SSWCOSM is to act as a vehicle to help these women and children move forward in a positive and productive way. The South Sudanese Women’s and Children’s Outreach Society of Minnesota works as a foundation to be a collaborative support system for women and children experiencing any form of domestic violence or abuse. The organization creates avenues for education and works as an advocate to empower women through economic independence, ultimately trying to put an end to physical, emotional, sexual, and all other forms of abuse against women and children in our society. The SSWCOSM is an organization that is committed to the pursuit of a safe environment and a healthy community for a collection of courageous women and children – women that deserve an opportunity to grow as productive adults and children who deserve healthy, nurturing childhoods.
