How do we recognize the early signs of burnout?

First, know that burnout doesn’t usually arrive all at once. It builds gradually and is a biproduct of the many unique stressors we experience, namely, high workloads, demanding clients and opposing counsel, and a calendar that tells a story of multiple deadlines on the horizon. That constant level of stress can mask some of the early signs of burnout.

🔎 Watch for these signals:

• Feeling constantly exhausted, even after rest

• Increased irritability or impatience

• Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

• Losing motivation or satisfaction in your work

• Self-isolating in a not helpful way

Take two minutes at the end of your day today and check in with yourself: “What drained me today? What helped me?” Awareness is the first step toward change. If you're noticing some of these signs, know that LCL can help! You are one call or email away from free and confidential assistance.

Long holiday weekends can be met with a variety of emotions. You might be looking ahead and thinking about getting a bit more sleep, reading a book, or getting outside for a walk or bike ride. A long weekend means restoration to you. Or the long weekend might look a bit too blank for you; the lack of structure and planned social time may leave you feeling empty in your bones. For still others, the holiday might be replete with memories of past holidays, some of which were conflict laden or difficult family interactions.

No matter how you anticipate the days ahead, just know that you’re not alone in whatever shows up for you. There is no “right” way to feel about a long weekend. Give yourself permission to meet this time with curiosity instead of judgment.

If rest is what you need, allow yourself that space to slow down. If the quiet feels uncomfortable, consider reaching out to someone you trust or building in small points of connection or structure. And if difficult memories or emotions surface, remember that support is available; you don’t have to carry those feelings by yourself.

Taking care of your well-being can be as simple as pausing, checking in with yourself, and choosing one small, supportive step.

Although our offices are closed on Monday, May 25, our phones are answered 24/7. Reach out if you need help.

✨ Well-Being Week in Law: Moments Matter ✨

Day 4 of Well-Being Week in Law is all about connection and how even brief, unexpected moments can make a meaningful impact on our well-being.

In this blog, Patty Devoy shares a heartfelt story about how a simple, chance moment at a Minnesota Wild game sparked joy, laughter, and meaningful connection. https://mnlcl.org/blog/moments-of-connection-by-patty-devoy/ Whether it’s reaching out to a colleague, attending an event, or just staying open to the people around you, opportunities for connection are everywhere. Take a few minutes to read and reflect: How will you create (or notice) moments of connection today?

The legal profession is known for its stress-inducing environment: demanding hours, high caseloads, tight deadlines and its adversarial nature. Add in client expectations, the culture of overwork and the personality of many lawyers, and exhaustion and burnout can result. Where does this leave us in our ethical duties to our clients when exhaustion is part of our everyday? How do we prevent it from setting in at the first instance?

Join us for this free CLE where we'll talk about boundaries and how to intentionally set and maintain them in multiple domains of our lives. Please like and share with any legal professional who wants to become more intentional with their time and energy.
