Thank you to the City of Woodbury, MN - Government, for endorsing the Civic Pledge for a Stronger Minnesota during last night’s City Council meeting.

By proclaiming your commitment to the Pledge and amplifying it through a proclamation, Woodbury is modeling how local governments can take tangible steps to strengthen civic culture and reduce polarization.

This type of leadership—practical, principled, and community-centered—is exactly what Minnesota needs. Thank you for setting an example others can follow.

What we do next in life-changing moments matters. Read the MPR News interview with Colin Hortman, Melissa and Mark Hortman's son, to be inspired to do something to better our community.

As the Minnesota Legislature prepares to honor Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, their son Colin shares in an MPR News interview how he’s coping with grief and hoping their deaths remain a clarion call for toned-down political rhetoric.

Today is yet ANOTHER decisive moment in Minnesota. What we do next matters for our state, our country, and our fellow neighbors.

As community members, leaders, neighbors, and citizens, we can pledge to:
✔️ Reject political violence in all forms, and stand firmly against rhetoric that incites violence
✔️ Engage peacefully with fellow Minnesotans
✔️ Work in good faith to resolve disputes
✔️ Embrace the hard but necessary work of finding common ground

Now is the moment to choose what you will do next. Consider signing the Civic Pledge for a Stronger Minnesota and encourage others to join you.

By signing the pledge, you represent the large majority of fellow Minnesotans who reject political violence and support peaceful engagement in civic life.

No American should ever be spoken of in derogatory terms. Senator Jim Abeler showed leadership by sending a letter right to the source, and while others have voiced similar sentiments privately, his willingness to continue to speak out publicly matters.

It matters because his statement showcases what peaceful political engagement can look like - even and especially when communicating a disagreement.

It matters because his statement rejects the rhetoric that can lead to political violence.

It matters because his letter doesn't demonize - he communicates in good faith.

The statements you say publicly can affect change in others. If you are encouraged to stand up for respect, dialogue, and democracy, consider signing our Civic Pledge for a Stronger Minnesota or hosting a signing event. More details can be found at whatwecandoweek.org/pledge.

Read the MPR News coverage of the statement here: https://www.mprnews.org/story/2025/12/06/republican-state-senator-to-trump-somalis-are-woven-into-minnesotas-fabric

State Sen. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, wrote a letter inviting President Donald Trump to join him in meeting with the Somali community, to understand how Somalis are “woven into Minnesota’s fabric.”
