What's that? Wednesday 🐫 again?! You've made it mid-way through the week, let's celebrate by finding out where YOUR 2016 Count of Ashes, Jeff MacDonald, is now! 🔥✌🔥

Now celebrating 🔟 years out(‼), Jeff reminisces 💭 that he didn’t truly understand the Vulcan's impact in local communities until he was selected himself! Growing up seeing 👀 them at various parades and events, he always saw a group that was having the time of their lives 🎉, and thought: "WHY NOT!?"

Two memories really hit home for Ash. First, being able to run his hometown 🏠 parade (Kaposia Days) and recognizing more than normal amounts of friends 👭👬 and family along the parade route was really special! AND - he would be remiss if he didn't mention meeting his wife 👰, Natalka (who is also your current - 2026 - Princess of the East Wind 💜)! "We met at a birthday party for a mutual friend," says Ash, "and the rest is history! ❤💜"

Since his run year, Jeff spent some time serving on the board for F&B 🔥, served as part of the team of Festival Chairs for Winter Carnival 2023 ❄, and is now an active "Lord" for his lovely bride! "In 2022, we moved west of Faribault and now live full-time on a lake 🚣, fully embracing lake life!"

Finally, Ash offers a bit of advice 🔊 for new krewes, or anyone thinking of participating: "while running parades, connect with people who can’t easily step up to the front of the route. Offer them a button, a '✌,' a 'thank you,' or simply some time ⏳." He continues, "above all, do what you can to make the experience even better for next year’s Krewe!" 👏

Where, oh where are they NOW?! Today, we feature 📣 Craig Bretoi - YOUR 1998 Baron Hot Sparkus 🔥✌️🔥!

Pre-SPARKY days, Craig's dad would share HIS stories of being a part of the St. Paul Winter Carnival (even one about riding his horse 🏇 through the lobby of the Saint Paul Hotel, or local establishments with literal "guns 🔫 a blazin'")! His mother also marched in parades with Sibley High School. These fond memories made him also want to have a shared participation! In 1983 the krewe visited Sparky's school 🏫 adding another "spark" (😏😉) to his fire 🔥. His connection with Jim Nalapinski's son, as well as later working with Mark Salmen's wife Sue would prove fate for Craig, and he was eventually selected to the '98 Krewe ✌️.

Of course, for any member of Fire and Brimstone, choosing a "favorite" memory 💭 can prove difficult, and Craig has many. That said - he reflects fondly of one specific visit during the 1️⃣0️⃣ days of Carnival. "We went to Shriner's Children's Hospital."

"Over the visit, there was one little boy immobilized in a hospital bed who was wheeled down by staff so that he could participate." Sparky continues: "my Klinker (Marty Prjevic), sat down and took off his goggles 🥽 to talk to this boy. It turned out this boy lived on the same street that Marty lived on growing up. This boy lit up when this giant man knew his neighbors, and it was then that I realized the power and magic 🪄✨️ the Vulcans have to make someone's day a little better." Of course none of them left with a dry eye 🥹.

Since his days on krewe, Spark began to travel 🛩 extensively for work and fell away from the organization for a period of time. Fast forward to 2016 when he and his bride 👰‍♀ began attending events again, recalling with ease how welcoming the organization, its members and family were. "It's been great to come back and begin serving our organization and the community again!"

Of course, Sparky can offer a bit of advice for new potential members to the krewe / organization, as well as what could prove to be a good reminder for "the old guys!" "The St. Paul Winter Carnival ❄️ and Vulcan 🔥✌️ organizations are a part of the fabric that makes up the city of St. Paul. That fabric weaves through generations; to participate, provides you the honor and privilege to weave YOUR thread into that fabric. Your involvement connects you to generations of people who have loved this city, the Carnival and F&B."

Sparky continues: "be curious. Talk to the people and grow your circle. Have fun, but remember to do the work. You get out what you put in. Don't forget why you wanted to be a part of this organization." And finally - "Fire & Brimstone has been here before any of us. It's bigger than any of us, but needs your help to be a worthwhile endeavor for generations that follow." 👏👏👏

"Where are they now?!" ‼️

Well, friends, wait no more, we are BACK with Where Are They Now Wednesday!

Celebrating 2️⃣0️⃣ years out, we are pleased to welcome back YOUR 2006 Count of Ashes, Chad Ash Bruner! 👏🔥✌️🔥👏

Reflecting back on why he became a Vulcan, Chad says "a good friend of mine was considering running 🏃‍♂️, and asked if I would also be interested." He had heard of the Vulcans, but didn't have all the info. Originally, he thought, 🤔 "nah." BUT, the more it was discussed, it seemed like the better the opportunity, and looking back, Ash says it's one of the best decisions he's ever made! 🏆

Some of Ash's favorite memories 💭 include some of the travel 🛫 the krewe gets to partake in, particularly to the Hernando DeSoto Heritage Festival, and the Festival of Billy Bowlegs ☠️. "Traveling to the warm locations, the hospitality, and being able to spend time on the water 🌊 was amazing!"

These days, Ash stays involved with F&B, tho perhaps not quite as much as his run year! 😉 He and his lovely bride bought a cabin in WI 🌳🪵🌲, and much of their time is now spent there, enjoying life!

As any wise-Ash would (😏), Chad offers this piece of advice for new members, or those considering throwing their hats 🎩🧢 in the ring to be selected to a krewe: "it's going to go fast, so enjoy EVERY moment!" He continues "parts of it may be tough 💪, but before you know it, it's over!"

Over the weekend, and along with the 2024 Krewe, we were once again thrilled to participate at Bridge View School's annual FunFest!

Grilling hot dogs, burgers, and socializing with the great folks of St. Paul is what being part of our organization is all about!
