2025 has been the worst year for LGBTQ Iowans by a wide margin, thanks largely to the supermajorities in both the State House and State Senate, which allow the most extreme policies and appointments to go unchecked. But we have a chance to change that. The special election in State Senate District 1 has the opportunity to upset this balance and end the Senate supermajority, finally providing a check to the Governor's ability to appoint hateful, unqualified candidates to positions on the Human Rights Board.
While we don't normally weigh in for special elections, this one is just too important to remain silent.
So today we are proudly endorsing Catelin Drey for State Senate. We were impressed by Catelin's passion for working-class Iowans and her commitment to equality for all. She is a smart, level-headed mom who will make a great legislator. Contrast this with the far-right conspiracy theorist that Republicans have nominated, and the choice cannot be clearer.
When asked for a comment on her endorsement, Drey had this to say:
"I am honored to have the support of One Iowa Action as we charge towards election day in this special election. It is time for us to get back to an Iowa that loves and supports all of our neighbors."
If you live in SD1 (link here to see where the district is located: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/publications/DMP/1366281.pdf), we encourage you to vote for Catelin Drey on Tuesday, August 26th. If you don't, consider volunteering or making a donation in favor of Catelin.
