About Us
The Karen Chemical Dependency Collaboration (KCDC) is a cross-sector collaboration that works together to develop, implement, and evaluate interventions to address harmful substance use and the problems it is causing in the Karen community.
KCDC’s approach is guided by 6 principles (“the 6 C’s”) that define our work, which are: Community driven, Culturally responsive, Capacity building, Comprehensive, Collaborative, and Compassionate.
Guided by feedback from Karen community leaders in Minnesota, KCDC developed four initiatives for responding to harmful alcohol use and associated problems in the Karen community. These initiatives were: to develop a culturally specific substance use treatment program, build the capacity of Karen interpreters to interpret in mental health and substance use treatment settings, develop prevention education materials in Karen language, and build the capacity of Karen pastors and faith leaders to help families facing these issues.
