The National Commander of the American Legion made a trip to Duluth and other Northland cities Tuesday to advocate for veterans facing unique challenges throughout the region.

Do you know of a specific veteran who has impacted your community, business, or school? Do you want to see that they are recognized for their efforts? The MN Humanities Center is sponsoring a recognition program to honor 25 veterans who have returned to MN and made a difference in their community. The "25 Veterans Voices Awards Ceremony" will take place at the Minnesota Humanities Center on September 11, 2013. You can find more information and nomination forms at http://mnhum.org/vets

THE SERVICE FLAG:

The Service Flag was created and patented by Army Captain Robert Queissner from the 5th Ohio Infantry, whose sons were then serving in World War I. It has since become the official DoD-approved banner for display by the families of service members deployed in harm's way.

The Service Flag is authorized for conspicuous display in the place of residence of a spouse, parent, step-parent, sibling, children, or step-children of a service member during time of conflict.

The blue stars on the Service Flag represent a family member serving, with each subsequent star representing an additional family member.

A silver star on the Service Flag represents a family member wounded or injured while in the war zone.

A gold star on the Service Flag represents a family member who has given the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

The color of the stars is symbolic in that the blue star represents hope and pride and the gold star represents sacrifice to the cause of liberty and freedom. The silver star is a symbol of remembrance and honor.
