🐝The addition to bees in our garden has been such a joy.
🌻🪻🌸 Many gardeners plant a variety of pollinators and native plants to keep the almost 200,000 bees happy.

Dave has raised bees previously in Indiana in his yard, in Minnesota it’s a little different with permits ect.

🍯 The last harvest has happened, the comb returned to the supers to have the remainder cleaned by the bees and preparation for winter begins.
❄️ More on that in a future post.

Meet Alex 🐝🌼
This beautiful native garden is focusing on our pollinator friends. With the exception of honey berry, everything Alex thoughtfully plants is a gift to the 25+ species of bumblebees and numerous butterflies.
Some of these get over 10 feet tall. Plants like honey berry take 3-4 years to produce fruit and they taste like blueberries.
🌼Compass plants take 4-5 years to flower, but live over 100 years! Making them crucial for natures compass across prairies following the sun.
🌾Prairie dock, Indian plantain, wild bergamot, figwort, and the cup plants sway in the windy and are quite hardy. They are just filled with bees and butterflies today.

Feasting on the nectar, seeds, drinking from water pools, and resting spots are all necessary for our pollinator friends.
This is such a relaxing calm space in our gardens.

🙋🏻How does our community garden work? Who is the community?

🧑🏽‍🌾👩🏻‍🌾👨🏾‍🌾We have a community day once a month where we do work around the garden, chat over coffee and treats, and help each other with tasks.

💪🏿💪🏼All of our gardeners fund their own plot, do all the work to maintain, and also help in the common spaces. Some have a co gardener or partner to help.

☀️While anyone is welcome to enjoy the beauty and peacefulness, please to not pick from the gardens.☀️
We do donate to the food shelf and work with a few farms. Some of us have gardens at home, while for some, this as their only outdoor space and sanctuary.

🤔Are you curious how you can get in on this rewarding hobby or maybe driven by?
DM us with any questions, we’d love to chat with you!
📝Please add yourself to the wait list on our website listed in our bio to join our community!

🌱✨I bet if you stopped by on a community day to pitch in, you’d leave with at least a handful of garden goodies!☺️

🌻Here’s just a few of our sunflowers around the garden.
☀️These plants are believed to be genuine followers of the sun in terms of spiritual meaning. Many believe even in low light; sunflowers desire to see the sun and turn their head to the sun in worship and devotion.
🌞 The sunflower’s yellow color signifies vibrancy, intellect, and pleasure. The color yellow also traditionally symbolizes companionship.
🌻Sunflowers come in white, orange, red (pictured in bottom left of 3rd photo), pink, and of course vibrant yellow.

🦋Kathy🦋
Her sign designed and painted by her son is so stunning in the background of her beautiful space.

Kathy has been at the gardens for 7 years, while maintaining a garden at home.

She has learned to avoid root veggies here because voles will eat them all. 😏😆

Her focus besides numerous pollinator plants this year is cabbage, garlic, kale, swiss chard, multiple peppers and tomato. She’s looking forward to making lots of salsa.

In the 3rd photo you can see her dill. Not only tasty, it’s a pest repellent and shade for her 🌶️ peppers.

🌼Dahlia & Steven🌼

Starting off their first season here, they decided to do all seedlings. Varieties of tomatoes (4th photo), watermelon (3rd photo) hot and sweet peppers, greens, onion and leeks to name a few.
They inherited these well made garden boxes and have enjoyed the friendly neighbors.
On the flip side pests made their way through a few crops, but they found been oil to help. It’s been so neat to see some things grow, and then observe why the jalapeños (4th photo) are so tiny. Their Swiss chard (1st photo) was 3 feet high!

Gardening is an experiment and we are enjoying it very much! Next year they will spread the tomato plants more, they are doing well. And huge! 🥰

“Next year I want to make this more of my sanctuary by adding a table, chair, and some decor.”

We've got Eric J Coffman to thank for the gorgeous new lawn underneath our billboards! What a contribution! Individual initiatives like this one have made our garden what it is from day 1. Thanks, Eric! Can't wait to see what you get after next! 📷 by Ben Owen
