As Rice County hosts the Minnesota Governor’s Pheasant Hunting Opener this weekend, we’re highlighting the conservation work happening behind the scenes to support wildlife habitat and water quality.

Through programs like Reinvest in Minnesota (RIM), Rice Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) works with private landowners to permanently protect and restore conservation lands. In Rice County alone, more than 70 landowners have enrolled over 2,200 acres, helping support wildlife habitat, improve water quality and protect natural resources for future generations.

As Minnesota celebrates the start of pheasant hunting season and 75 years of Wildlife Management Areas, it’s a great reminder that locally led conservation plays a vital role in keeping Minnesota’s lands and wildlife thriving.

When an opportunity arose to bring conservation into a broader conversation about tourism in southeast Minnesota, members of Fillmore Soil and Water Conservation District were ready to act. Riley Buley and Eunie Biel of Fillmore SWCD attended an event highlighting Minnesota tourism after connecting Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning center with staff from the office of U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar.

Riley and Eunie were able to share how locally led conservation makes a real difference in Minnesota communities. Kudos to them for building connections and recognizing a unique opportunity to spread conservation awareness in an unexpected way!

Last month, MASWCD leaders and SWCD representatives from across the state came together at Minnesota Farmfest to connect with farmers, policymakers, industry leaders, and conservation partners.

SWCD representatives hosted a booth to connect directly with farmers, share information about locally led conservation and highlight the resources and technical assistance available to Minnesota landowners.

MASWCD leaders also attended forums featuring candidates for Minnesota governor, U.S. Congress and U.S. Senate, providing an opportunity to hear about emerging priorities and stay connected to conversations affecting Minnesota communities.

From conversations at the booth to connections with partners and policymakers, Farmfest was another opportunity to make sure locally led conservation has a strong voice in Minnesota.

🎉 Congratulations to the graduates of the first-ever District Manager Professional Development Cohort (DMPD), sponsored by MASWCD!

Over the course of a year, 13 district managers from Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCDs) across Minnesota came together for seven in-depth, multi-day sessions designed to enhance their management skills, financial acumen and operational efficiency while strengthening relationships with peers, exchanging ideas and experiences, and building confidence in their ability to lead effective teams and advance conservation work across Minnesota.

This year's inaugural cohort included Brayden Anderson (Yellow Medicine SWCD), Riley Buley (Fillmore SWCD), Lindsey Cornell (Freeborn SWCD), Tiffany Determan (Isanti SWCD), Ashley Gallagher (Dakota SWCD), Kay Gross (Cottonwood SWCD), Jessica Klingfus (Dodge SWCD), Aaron Larsen (West Otter Tail SWCD), Bryan Malone (Becker SWCD), Jaren Peplinski (Kanabec SWCD), Carrie Schultz (Watonwan SWCD), Tara Solem (Lake SWCD), and Paul Swanson (Pine SWCD).
