As we prepare for the Hawkinson Fund 2026 Award Ceremony and Gala on November 13, we are excited to introduce the remaining five awardees who provided mutual aid services to their local communities this year.

Our Lady of Guadalupe Free Clinic (OLGFC) is a faith-based nonprofit free clinic located in Worthington, MN, that provides free medical care to anyone without health insurance. Its mission is to support the well-being of its community by providing access to healthcare, advocacy, and wellness education to those with limited healthcare options.

SPOKES is a mutual aid organization, connected to the Hubbs Center for Lifelong Learning in St. Paul, that emerged during Operation Metro Surge. SPOKES was founded to maintain the networks of care that formed during Operation Metro Surge and continue to raise funds to provide timely, emergency financial relief to Hubbs’ students to keep them from dropping out of school.

Rev. Rob Smith has served as pastor of Spirit of Life Presbyterian Church in Apple Valley for 14 years. Spirit of Life is a congregation deeply committed to being part of the community around them and to building partnerships that allow them to do more together than they could ever do alone.

In conjunction with the Whittier Water Cooler project, a group of community members developed a free food shelf project during neighborhood-wide meetings in Whittier and Lyndale in response to Metro Surge. The goal is to create an accessible and sustainable source of free food to address food scarcity in our community.

Immigrant Aid is a volunteer-run group in Wright and Sherburn counties founded in 2025 in response to shared concern for our immigrant neighbors, as fear settled over Minnesota’s undocumented community. This group supports new Americans who are struggling to provide for their families and to meet their basic needs in times of transition, and helps immigrants advocate for their rights.

On Thursday, September 24, the United community joyously celebrated Rev. Dr. Justin Sabia-Tanis’ formal installation into the Wilson Yates Chair in Theology and the Arts. Sabia-Tanis is the inaugural occupant of this newly endowed chair, and his address was titled “Living Art.”

On this Indigenous Peoples' Day, we stand in solemn solidarity with Indigenous communities who have suffered violent displacement and colonization; we honor the myriad cultures and traditions of Indigenous peoples; and we affirm Indigenous sovereignty, hopeful for the restoration of lands, rights, and community.

Dr. Ginger Morgan will offer a lecture titled “Caring for Communities Facing Catastrophe.” Rev. Dr. Andrew Packman (closest to the camera in the photo) will lecture about “The Role of Attention in Seminary Formation,” and Dr. Demian Wheeler (two in from Packman) will offer a taste of United’s “Invitation to Theology: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty.”
