This Workers’ Day, we’re taking a look at what’s working (and not working) for workers.
Nearly a year after federal law passed, Minnesota workers and families are bracing for its impacts. Devastating and major cuts were made to Medicaid, SNAP, and public services that working families count on to stay healthy and go to work.
Some tax policies like no tax on tips and no tax on overtime pay were framed as helping workers. But instead, they’re:
- Poorly designed
- Expire in a few years
- Do little to help those who need it most
- Create inequities among workers; &
- Reach only a small number of folks.
Meanwhile, the biggest tax cuts go to corporations and the wealthy: $117B in net tax cuts go to the top 1% highest-income US households in 2026 alone while tax cuts for tips and overtime pay total $121.2B over a decade.
There are better policies that work to support MN workers and families, including:
- Increasing the minimum wage to keep up with the cost of living;
- Expanding tax credits for working families;
- Lowering health coverage costs; and
- Raising the revenues needed to sustain critical public services.
This , Minnesota can choose policies that help all workers afford their lives and build stronger futures.
