Pheasant Fact Friday!

Since alfalfa is the first, lush, green growth each spring, and since other nesting habitat is generally lacking, hens will concentrate their nests in alfalfa fields. Up to 70% of the nests will be destroyed, and 50% of the hens destroyed by the swather. The nests not destroyed are heavily predated. Placing a flushing bar in front of the equipment to scare the hen from the nest does not work. The closer the hen is to hatching her young, the harder it is to make her leave. Short of an actual kick in the rear, she will not move.

Planting later maturing varieties of alfalfa, or waiting five to seven more days before mowing, would allow most hens to hatch the nests and move the chicks. If you see a hen running a short distance in front of the equipment, slow down, mow around the brood. Then come back to the island when the field is complete, and mow slowly with the blades six inches high.

Monsoon rains, desert grasslands, and wild coveys collide in Arizona’s ambitious quail restoration effort.

Arizona’s quail country is bigger, rougher, and more alive than most hunters realize. In this conversation, the crew behind Quail Forever’s Arizona Quail Initiative breaks down how large-scale habitat restoration is shaping the future of Gambel’s quail, scaled quail, and Mearns’ quail.

Exciting news from USDA! The same grasslands, shrublands, and rangelands that support habitat connectivity for migratory big game also provide essential habitat for upland birds and pollinators. Conservation works best when it works for both wildlife and landowners, and this new framework will strengthen voluntary conservation efforts on working lands across the West.

Today, USDA released Migratory Big Game: A Framework for Conservation Action. It's a landscape-scale plan to support conservation of elk, pronghorn and mule deer migration corridors across 17 states.

The Framework guides NRCS in how to better target Farm Bill programs like EQIP, CSP, ACEP and RCPP, and work with our sister agencies like the USDA Farm Service Agency, to protect key habitat through voluntary conservation.

We'll work with state and local partners to integrate guidance from the Framework into our locally-led conservation priorities. And if you’re a producer in the West who’s interested in implementing big game conservation practices on your land, like virtual fencing and more, contact us via your nearest USDA Service Center for details. https://www.nrcs.usda.gov/programs-initiatives/working-lands-for-wildlife/news/usda-unveils-new-framework-for-migratory-big

Pheasants Forever and The Nature Conservancy have protected 1,900 acres of native prairie, wetlands and restorable grassland in Clay County, near Fargo-Moorhead in northwestern Minnesota. A long-standing priority area for conservation partners, this acquisition strengthens a growing network of conserved prairie in the Red River Valley.

“Pheasants Forever is proud to support publicly accessible grassland projects benefiting multiple upland bird species in Minnesota’s western prairie range,” said Sabin Adams, Minnesota state coordinator for PF.

Pheasant Fact Friday!

During incubation, it's very important hen's turn the eggs each day. Each time she leaves the nest or stands to stretch, she will roll the eggs over. Gravity pulls the developing chick downward, so the chick actually lays on the inside of the egg shell. If it lays there for more than a day, it might stick to the shell. Hens keep turning the egg so the chick can keep flip-flopping inside the shell.

A chick sticking to the shell is more probable during drought conditions. With low humidity levels during incubation, chicks are more likely to stick and not hatch. States conducting pheasant brood surveys in July and August often note smaller brood sizes when May and June were hot and dry.
