RenegadeEnsemble, 1697 Lafond Ave, Saint Paul, MN (2026)

RenegadeEnsemble is a contemporary music ensemble devoted to the performance of music of living composers. Established in 2004 originally as a choral/vocal ensemble by Dr. Stanley H Rothrock II, RenegadeEnsemble has become a diverse chamber ensemble of instruments (piano, guitar, flute, percussion) and voice. Since its inception, RenegadeEnsemble has performed a broad range of contemporary works, including such 20th century staples as “Ballet Mécanique” by George Antheil, “In C” by Terry Riley, and “Sextet” by Steve Reich. In addition to performing, RenegadeEnsemble seeks to foster an audience for contemporary art music in the Upper Midwest by exposing and educating the general public to new music through performances, collaborations, workshops, and educational outreach.

Concert this week!

On Thursday, September 17, Twin Cities-based nonprofit RenegadeEnsemble will present the next installment of the 2026 Vanguard New Music Series. The concert will feature the locally-based Lemonbrass Quintet performing new works by local composers Jared Coffin, Michael Maiorana, Isaac Mayhew, and Daniel Schultz.

Lemonbrass, made up of Isaac Mayhew and Mary Beth Stevens on trumpet, Beth Trizna on horn, Daniel Schultz on trombone, and Ross Fugl on bass trombone formed in 2024 and have performed around the Twin Cities, focusing on new works by local composers. They are returning to the Vanguard New Music Series for the second consecutive year and will be premiering works by Coffin and Schultz and performing two more pieces that were written for the ensemble.

CONCERT TONIGHT!!

This concert will feature the acclaimed Larkspur and Reed5 woodwind trios performing new works by local composers Jonathan Posthuma, Isaac Mayhew, and Martin Van Klompenberg.

The Larkspur Reed Trio, made up of oboist Stephanie Carlson, English horn player Susan Miranda, and clarinetist Amy McCann, was formed after a performance at the International Double Reeds Society conference. They have gone on to perform across the United States as well as internationally, with a focus on bringing chamber music to new audiences and into new spaces. In 2024, they received a grant from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council to commission and perform a program of new works in libraries across Minnesota as well as in Tennessee and Kentucky.

The program will consist of several world premieres by Mayhew, Posthuma, and Van Klompenberg as well as other previously-composed pieces by the latter two composers, including Posthuma’s four-movement work A Musical Field Guide to Minnesota Wildflowers.

Let’s meet Larkspur Reed Trio!

Since the organization’s inception, the ensemble has performed at The International Clarinet Association conference in Denver, Colorado, Dublin, Ireland, and Forth Worth, Texas, and they performed at the International Double Reed Society Conference in Flagstaff, AZ. The trio has a strong passion for music education working to reach youth around the world through live performance and educational videos. With a grant from the Minnesota Regional Arts Council the trio collaborated with author Alexandra Alessandri and composer Alejandra Odgers to create a brand new musical story with the children’s story Isabel and Her Colores Go To School. The program was performed live in Minnesota libraries and throughout Tennessee and Kentucky. The video is available at no cost in both English and Spanish on the ensemble’s YouTube page. The ensemble has presented their “Educational Entrepreneurship: Creating Your Own Path as Performers” presentation at the College Music Society Conference in Washington, DC and ClarinetFest in Fort Worth, TX. The trios next venture is “From Sea to Sky,” a program for adults about phenomenal women and their impressive stories. The ensemble will share this program at retirement communities and nursing homes throughout Minnesota.
