This morning, our organizers were joined by students from Macalester College to learn more about the environmental impacts faced daily by residents living closest to the Southport Industrial area on the West Side.

ℹ️ Did you know that asthma-related emergency visits in ZIP code 55107 are more than twice as high as the state and metro averages?

Full transparency means the full story. Here’s the street renaming process, explained start to finish.

TL;DR: Moving collectively means working through differing opinions with care and gathering the full group when decisions are made. This approach slows the process down, but we believe it’s more thorough and representative of the inclusive process our community called for. WSCO is reconvening the Cesar Chavez St. Renaming committee to determine next steps; we can’t confirm new voting dates or ballot changes yet, but a community vote will still be held.

Thank you to our community for staying engaged even when it takes time. We are West Side Proud! 💚

The Cesar Chavez Street Renaming Committee has been clear and committed from the beginning: this process should center all community perspectives. Narrowing these perspectives into a final decision is a responsibility they are approaching with great care and consideration. Unfortunately, bureaucracy has a way of forcing timelines onto things that deserve care. That is why they will be taking the time needed to fully consider feedback on the finalist names that emerged from last month’s community input sessions.

New dates and times will be announced soon. Find them here on our WSCO social media and on our website at wsco.org/streetrenaming.

Thank you for voicing your opinions and for your patience while we thoughtfully consider next steps!
