June 20th marks World Refugee Day, honoring the resilience and strength of refugees worldwide. Since 1975, the International Institute of Minnesota has resettled over 26,000 refugees.

Refugee services are part of the important work we do at the Institute. Despite the challenges we have faced from this administration surrounding refugee resettlement, we will continue to stand with and support refugees who come to our state.

For World Refugee Day, we want to introduce the inspiring story of Alice. She spent 22 years in a refugee camp in Rwanda before being resettled by the Institute. Since then, Alice has accomplished so much. We are proud to see her growth and success since making Minnesota her home!

The ruling by Judge John J. McConnell Jr. is a victory for all immigrants, refugees, and asylees who have had the doors unlawfully closed to them for months because of their country of origin. The 39-country ban has caused significant harm to thousands of immigrants and caused an unnecessary backlog in our immigration system that was based on discrimination.

“New Americans are vital to the growth of our country. Their presence and contributions strengthen our communities. We applaud the efforts by our sister agency, Dorcas International Institute of Rhode Island for their leadership in this lawsuit,” said Jane Graupman, executive director of the International Institute of Minnesota.

We 💗 hearing from our non-profit clients after their fundraising events!

We recently partnered with the International Institute of Minnesota- an organization dedicated to helping New Americans achieve self-sufficiency and full membership in American life.

On every project, we learn and understand through deeply personal paths shared just like your audience of potential donors or volunteers.

The impact of sharing Alice's 22-year journey from a refugee camp to becoming a U.S. citizen has been profound as the organization's Nonprofit Development Manager shared with us in this quote.

Refugees defied all odds to arrive here.

Refugees do not voluntarily leave their homes. They are forced to flee due to a well-founded fear of persecution and cannot return to their home country.

They are extensively vetted prior to arrival; participating in multiple interviews, submitting biometrics and passing security checks. Many people wait a decade or longer to be resettled in a new country.

Refugees are immediately eligible to begin working. Refugee status provides a pathway to apply for permanent residency (a green card) and later, U.S. citizenship.

With a little help in the beginning, from organizations like the Institute, newly arrived refugees become self-sufficient faster!

In an effort to celebrate New American contributions that strengthen our state and country, we are sharing the truth and fighting ignorance not immigrants.
We invite you to join us in this movement!
