Multiracial folx as well as transracial adoptees often feel the need to choose which identity they belong to. You might be too asian to be white but too white to be asian, never quite being able to be one or the other. How do you manage and live with this feeling?

Code switching is often an integral part of our lives whether we notice it or not. It’s the way we shift our presentations of ourselves to others. It can be in the form of language or behavior and can be a form of coping, survival, and assimilation.

How is your experience with code switching?

TW: Loss

Adoption is a mixed world. There is often a halo around the idea of adopting a child, a notion that one might save an innocent from a terrible circumstance, but that is not always the case.

With adoption comes trauma and invisible pain that we do not always know how to handle. How do you miss something you’ve never had? May often brings Mother’s Day in countries around the world but for adoptees and their parents, all of them, it can represent a day of loss and sacrifice.

We honor the mothers and the fathers, the parents who have never been recognized, who have not had a voice or the chance to say goodbye. International adoptions to the Untied States after the Korean Wa and to this day, can be shrouded in mystery and guilt for something we could never have. Closed adoptions shut the doors for both mother and child and we must recognize the difficulties that both sides face.

From across the sea or land, on Parents Day, Mothers Day, and more, we honor the experiences of mother’s sound the world.

This excerpt was taken from an anonymous post on adoption.com from 2018. In here are photos from my own adoption journey. I am grateful for the journey I’ve had but I still slide between being at peace, sadness, and loss for a family I’ve never had. I hope that this day brings as much joy as you’d like and that you are in a place that is warm and loving and kind. - Grace

TW:
May is Asian Pacific Island American Heritage month (AAPI for short). There are hundreds of thousands of AAPI adoptees around the world but even those numbers don’t accurately represent the whole population. There are many adoptees who came to where they are as a result of human trafficking and other illegal methods. Adoption isn’t glamorous but it IS an integral part of many people’s stories. We are just as apart of the AAPI world as anyone else and our own culture of identity is just as unique! Celebrate the intersectionality of AAPI month by DMing us your own story!
